I am getting panicky. I have gained 4 lbs already and am only 9 weeks along. My OB is not going to be happy with me. I love food. My aversions are diminishing at least, so I can eat some fruits and vegetables and not subsist on a steady diet of chips and lemonade.

I know I am not supposed to try to lose weight, but how do you go about keeping your weight gain reasonable?

ETA: I appear to be carrying this baby in my butt and thighs because that is where that 4 lbs appears to have gone.

why would your OB not be happy.

I gained 7 pounds in the first 9 weeks -- and was so proud of myslef only to have the OB tell me he really doesn't care about weight gain!

As long as you are eating health (mostly -- we all eat a little junk) then don't worry about it.

Your weight can fluctuate 4 pounds in a day nonpregnant. It's almost irrelevant. I'm not sure why you are so concerned about it?

I have gained a pound a week - and I'm 17 weeks.

I started out pretty thin - and the first 7 lbs or so were in my butt, hips, and lower back. DH loves the bigger butt!

From what I can figure, I'm at the top of my Oct DDC in terms of weight gain, but I'm ok with that. My OB and the nurses have been fine with my weight gain - even praised it.

I think that 4 pounds is definitely within a normal range. Good luck!

Thank you all. I don't know why I am panicking. Pregnancy weirdness, maybe? Anyway, I am trying to just eat sensibly, get in all my fruits and veggies, protein and whole grains at each meal.

Thanks again- I feel better.

As long as you are trying to eat sensibly (within the limits of what your preggo body will let you), then I wouldn't worry about it at all. Your body knows what it needs and will gain weight appropriately as long as you aren't eating brownies alllll day long

I know that I gained a lot of weight with DD (almost 50 lbs), spread out throughout the pregnancy, and no one gave me grief about it. I lost it all and 20 lbs more after she was born due to BF and walking, with no worries about eating. Now that won't necessarily happen to everyone, but I do think that our bodies just do what they have to in terms of weight when pregnant.

And ITA with the PP who said that our bodies fluctuate that much during a day. It can happen!

Masie I'm right there with you. I've gained 9 lbs in 12.5 weeks and I'm freaking a little too. When I try on maternity clothes the same size as my pre-preg size, the don't fit. A lot of the weight is in my hips and butt but I have a tummy now too (already!). My diet hasn't been great but isn't horrible either - too many cheeseburgers but plenty of fruit. I'm trying to remember that we all gain at our own pace, and we'll probably even out in the 2nd trimester. Just wanted to tell you that you're not alone! It definitely helps to hear the other replies too.

Sounds reasonable to me With Titus, I ate very well and still gained 80 pounds. The OB never said a word about my weight!

I'm sure its all good and normal but I know how you feel. Besides eating well, Id say try to work out or go on daily walks. Its good for the body and soul!

Now I need to take my own advice! ha!

At this point it's usually just fluid.

I beat you all and gained 86lbs with my first pregnancy. No complications, other then the cellulite and it was all gone by 7mos pp (baby ate REALLY well).

Actually the complications were the OB and CNM's fits at every weigh in The risked me out of their practice because they could find nothing wrong to treat, other then the fatness.

Excercize and eat to fulfillment; worry causes weight gain.

I also gained about 5 lbs in the first few weeks but have only gained about 10 in total now at 23 weeks. I think as long as you are eating healthily and not for 2 than u should not worry about it.

I agree, as long as you take care of yourself and do your best, try not to worry. My best friend had just lost 30 pounds last year when she got pg...she gained 40 pounds in her pregnancy. She had regular body image freakouts, especially when the doc told her she was gaining too much. She was just listening to her body and eating what she needed! "Oh my god I'm even fat for a pregnant lady"' she said! Anyhow, she looked great pregnant...like one of those annoying people who's thin but happens to have a basketball under her shirt. It's only been 4 months and she's lost all but 10.

I'm having my own little freakout...it's weird to be at the stage where you're not in maternity yet but you just are bigger. Ugh.

I'm not weighing myself at all...I never do, it's too much for me (I get neurotic about it), so I can't really say how much I've gained...when I go to the doctor's I turn around and just tell them not to tell me what it is...I just really need to trust my body here.

Good luck...but 4 pounds doesn't sound like much at all so try not to worry.

I hope it is water. I did just eat a bowl of quinoa, a bowl of pasta, some canteloupe, some almonds... *sigh* I am hoping with the warm weather coming I will want lighter stuff and not just bowl after bowl of carbs.... :

I am 11 weeks along and have gained 8 lbs. My midwife said not to worry about weight gain right now. She said that I need to eat what my body wants to. In my first pregnancy I lost weight until 14 weeks, so this is a dramatic change.
Don't worry about the weight yet.

You are definitely within the normal limits of weight gain at this point. You have nothing to worry about. I gained 5 lbs. in my first trimester with both of my other two pregnancies. The mw's were not concerned at all.

I was a little irritated with my dr. today. I haven't gained a lb. yet, I'm 150 lbs. prepregnancy and still am, and the dr. told me I really shouldn't gain more than 20 lbs. this pregnancy and that I need to walk for at least an hour each day to avoid excess weight gain. It's not like I'm overweight here! I thought she'd be happy that I haven't gained anything yet or tell me to start eating more so I would start gaining, but I got the opposite speal.

It really bugs me when doctors complain about weight gain. I gained 50 and 57 pounds with my DS and DD. And I wasn't eating brownies all day! I lost it all within 4 months pp.

I'm sure you're just fine.
