Not only did we pass an unconstitutional law violating the civil rights of some of our fellow citizens, but we now have the death penalty too. :

Yea, what's with that, WI elects a Dem governor and senator but passes those horrid amendments by a landslide? I couldn't believe it!

Don't fret too much, the death penalty still needs to be passed by the WI state govt. I am also truly pissed about the marriage bill that passed. :

I can't believe the way people voted on these amendments! It makes me so depressed. : They should never have been on the ballot.

I can't believe it!

I think the wording was very confusing. "No on the marriage ban" was my mantra and I still had to read the thing 2 or 3 times!

How sad & embarrassing for Wisconsin!

I am so embarrassed to be from Wisconsin right now.

I think it's ridiculous that we are even able to ammend the constitution with a freaking ballot initiative?! Especially an ammendment that takes away rights! Is society regressing?

I'm just disgusted. People should have equal rights because we live in the U.S. and that's what the U.S. supposedly stands for. Allowing a popular vote with regards to civil rights is completely un-American.

:

Hey, look at the bright side...we're in good company, since 20 other states have passed a similar referendum on marriage.

I was also really unhappy. Felt like there was no point in my voting sometimes.

Unfortunatley, no, Doyle cant do anything about the marriage amendment, it makes me sick :
He can however veto the death penalty, that was an advisory referendum, (I think thats what its called) and now it will have to be passed by the state congress and then onto his desk...for the VETO!

Does anyone else who partisipated in the Fair WI campain feel like they should have worked harder!?! Man, I know its silly, but I just keep feeling like if I had talked to more people...I know it passed by a huge margin, but I had this conversation with a friend of mines husband the day after the election

Me: "So did you get out and vote?"

Him: "Yup, I voted yes..Yes to civil unions.."

Me: "Um, I think you are confused...Yes means no gay marriage and no Civil Unions"

Him: "WHA!?! I thought that NO meant no gay marriage and civil Unions? Are you sure?

Me: "Did you read it?"

Him:"Well, it was too confusing."

Me: Crying inside wishing I would have talked to him BEFORE he voted

I wonder how many more people did the same thing?

IKWYM. I volunteered with Fair Wisconsin, and right after my sister voted, I asked, "you voted NO, right?" (I had previously shared my opinions with her.) She said, "I don't know what I voted; it was so confusing." (Then WHY did she vote at all? I don't know!?) She also said, "well, nothing changes, so it doesn't matter, right?"

However, I use the fact that it passed by such a large margin as my "proof" that we couldn't have had a different turnout even if we had worked harder. (Hey, I may be deluding myself, but I need to believe that... )

I think the wording was confusing, too.

A friend heard on the radio the day after the election a call-in fellow say, "Well, yes, I think marriage should be between a man and a woman, so I voted 'yes', but I'm OK with an additional amendent making it OK for gay people to get married, too."

Whaa? People just didn't know the impact of what they were voting for.

YES!! I'm feeling horribly guilty. Starting in September I volunteered once a week, phone banks or canvassing. I had planned on doing it twice a week then got pregnant. With twins. The morning (allday) sickness was debilitating, I was on the couch or in the bathroom by 4 pm every day through the election. : I know it's not my fault, but I feel like I should have pulled it together enough to help! Also signed up to work Get Out the Vote on the 7th, but spent the day in the peds office with my daughter and a double ear infection.

I know I did what I could, but I still feel like it should have been more.

My MIL thought the same thing, that voting yes meant yes to civil unions and gay marriages. Fortunately we talked about it before the election and I sent her a link to the "fair Wisconsin" site. I hope it helped clear it up for her. Scary that so many people might have been confused!

I'
m also mad about this - it's just so crappy! I definetly don't want anyone telling me who I can and cannot marry! I agree it was confusing, but I don't really think it was THAT confusing - just had to read carefully. I made sure DH knew how to vote !!

I think that people DID know the impact that they were voting for and that is why the marriage amendment was passed. This is still a pretty conservative state.

Wow, I can't believe you would show up here and say something like that to people who are obviously grieving about having it rubbed in their faces that some people in this state are less equal than others. That takes some nerve.

As for your comment that this is "still" a pretty conservative state, this actually *used* to be a pretty progressive state. At any rate we, or our children, will look back in shame and disgust at what people used to think about gay parternerships. I guarantee you that day will come, and I do not know how I will explain it to my children or my grandchildren. Just like today we can't believe that in many states it used to be illegal for people of different races to get married.

I bet the people who passed those discriminatory laws were also quite convinced of the righteousness of their "impact" as well.
