Lorenzo Robin and Araminta Wren were born on Monday, March 3, via c-section at 36 weeks gestation. They are 5lbs 9oz and 4lbs 12 oz, respectively.

On Friday, at a routine checkup, the doctor noted that I was 2cm dilated and 80% effaced, and he asked to see me again Monday, as they didn't want me going into active labor with the babies both breech. I came in Monday as scheduled, and had dilated past 3cm, so he sent me upstairs to Labor & Delivery for monitoring. That was where they discovered that I was having regular contractions at four minute intervals. I had known I was contracting, and that it was a bit stronger than anything I had felt previously, but I have a high tolerance for pain/discomfort, and these contractions just didn't seem that bad to me. Whoops.

The babies are a tad undercooked, and both are in the NICU right now. Lorenzo cried beautifully at first and I got to hold and snuggle him for a little bit, until he started having some trouble with his breathing when we were in Recovery, and they took him away to give him some oxygen and monitor him more closely. Araminta cried well too, but her breathing was likewise a bit labored and they took her away so quickly that I barely got to see her at all. Now she’s having some hyperglycemia, which very well might be a side effect of a medication they put her on for the breathing. They’re running some tests and will know more in a few hours.

They're both fine, really. They just didn't get their lungs properly squeezed because they didn't get a vaginal birth. But they're doing well, and I may be biased, but I think they're pretty adorable.

UPDATE - Araminta's been taken off the CPAP and now just has a little nasal cannula! Her blood sugar issues are all resolved. Lorenzo is doing well, and they're hoping to have him off the CPAP later today or tomorrow.

UPDATE 3/5/08, 12:05 am - Both babies are now on nasal cannulas and doing beautifully. They are squirmy and and beautiful. I got to hold Araminta earlier today, and put her to the breast briefly. She knew EXACTLY what to do with that nipple once she got ahold of it. We're going to try again tomorrow, and since Lorenzo's off the CPAP too now, I should be able to try with him as well. As for me, well, I'm very sore and my legs/ankles/feet are more swollen now than they ever got while I was pregnant (which I wouldn't have thought was possible). But I have darling babies, and it's all so very worth it.

congrats on the babies i'm sure everything will be okay!

it's just so crazy how some women don't even know they're in active labor. i never had stomach contractions (besides braxton hicks), just period-like cramps and severe back contractions with my daughter. i'm hoping this time is the same thing (not the SEVERE back contractions though lol), so that way i don't have to keep looking for stomach contractions, b/c honestly, i have no clue what they feel like...i could be in labor and wouldn't be sure lol.

anyway, good luck with everything!!!

kup!
