My name is Gerasim, and I have a penis.

I realize that this fact, in itself, is not particularly exceptional. In fact, if my fiancé is to be believed, there are literally hundreds of us, scuttling hurriedly about, heads down, acutely aware of the fleshy appendage that forces us to take apart perfectly functional electronics. What is exceptional, or at least what I've come to believe is exceptional is this:

I, Gerasim - penis and all - have spent the last few weeks lurking quietly at a fair number of midwifery and midwifery-related forums. I've excitedly borne witness to no less than 13 hilariously one-sided (yet fierce) debates on breast-feeding. I've watched my resistance to proselytizing of the anti-vax contingent gradually subside as I learned to filter out the sensationalists and listen to the level-headed majority. I've even learned a great deal about the female reproductive system (FUN FACT: ladies do not have penises.)

All silliness aside, I would genuinely like to learn from you guys. The person I want to spend the rest of my life with wants to spend the rest of her life helping mothers bring children into this world. She's chosen to do so as a midwife. So I want to figure out exactly what it is they do, and why, and how I can help make it happen for her.

If it's okay, I'd like to take time out of my busy schedule of eating Funyuns and reading continental philosophy to try to do that here, amongst hippies and mommies and neat people of all sorts.

It's good to meet you. [:
