We just got back from a weekend trip to Oriental/Bayboro/New Bern.
DH met w/ a great guy who has an old victorian he's going to hire DH to remodel. So cool b/c he's a retired very crunchy guy who recycles *everything*, using old real estate signs as plywood, plaster from the house for his driveway, old bricks as walkways, etc etc etc. Grows his own vegetables & just lives very simply. I love him & his wife already. (ok, so he looks alot like a long haired Jerry Garcia, too which won me over ) We were originaly going to barter with him that we would live in the house free as DH remodeled but it's not in good enough shape for the kiddos so we checked out some rentals. He hooked us up with a friend of his who's an agent & also wants DH to work for him. Found a 3 bedroom 2 bath on the water for $800/ month (GREAT compared to here). The town of Oriental was cool in that we can walk everywhere & be on the water. I'm only concerned b/c it seemed to be mostly retired people, not many families let alone any (first impression) like-minded (I don't know how else to put it) people. I felt kinda like a freak w/ my crazy color hair & tattoos walking around this fairly upper class/older town. But all the young girls were like "Wow, we love your hair! You're not from here right?" LOL! Outside of town it's farms, lots of farms, lots of trailers. I'll probably keep DS home for another year & check out the local charter school in Arapahoe b/c I asked the agent friend about the schools (his DH is only 2) & he wasn't particularly thrilled with the local school system. We'll just have to hang out at the park, the library, etc until we meet some kids & mommas.
Anyway, this is a great opportunity for DH & we're going to head down there in June. It may just be a stopping place, not permanent until we figure out where we're heading next. Wish us luck & anyone in the area PLEASE get in touch!

well you could definitely find some crunchies over in ocracoke (i have a friend who goes there to read tarot from time to time) and i know there's a very active onslow county tribe here (jacksonville, etc), but i don't know about oriental. hope you can find a like-minded soul or two. it sounds like a lovely place. not sure i've ever been.
