So my MIL is paying for us all to go on an Eastern Caribean cruise for a week. She is VERY concerned about everyone getting sick on the criuse or in the Caribean and wants all of us (the adults and the kids), including my BIL and sil (early 20's) to get the HEP A vax since HepA is transmitted through food.

My kids are unvaxed, and the Hep A vax isn't on the recommended schedule anyway...

I know what is in these shots and I am not comfortable with that. Is it worth it to do this? How do I handle my MIL?

In 2006, hepatitis A vaccine was universally recommended for children 12+ months.

No, it's not worth it - most children who get hepatitis A are asymptomatic and you've probably had it already. In fact, 1/3 of Americans are already immune to hepatitis A -- and that's probably a conservative estimate.

FTR to the reader, hepatitis A is NOT a chronic disease like hepatitis C and B. You get it, it goes away and you're immune for life.

As far as your MIL - it's really none of her business, but I would just tell her you've decided not to do it if she asks. Better yet, tell her your ped said it's not necessary - that'll shut her up.

Thanks for this. I just found the info to back up everything you've said. We won't be injecting this into ourselves or our kids!

on a side note; I may have already had this.... I got very very ill a week after I got back from Mexico a few years ago...
