We are planning to move to Woodland as I have family in Davis and further west in Concord but I have a question: My realtor keeps saying that West Sac is just as far from Concord as is Woodland and housing is cheaper there. So hes been encouraging us to look there. Woodland only has one acupunturist (which is what I do) so that could be a benefit to living there. I have no idea of what Acupuncture is like in West Sac.

So my question is what is West Sac like? I was thinking it was not very good neighborhoods - but some of these houses look nice. Is it a good place for a family?

Thanks!

imho, west sac is not such a great area. i think it used to be much nicer. i'm sure there are nicer areas, but you rarely hear anyone talking about how they want to move to west sac! like i siad, just mho. i think the acupuncturist business is pretty much spread all over the city, but it also seems that they are in areas w/ a large asian population- it doesn't seem too big here (i used to work for one, AND i have a tristen- born 4/8/01- eerie, eh?). haha.

and don't plan on moving out anytime soon. West Sac is a mixed bag, just like any other city. We have a bad rap since it was a poorer community for a long time. But times are a changing here. Lots of new housing, we have a huge influx of people from the Bay Area moving here to commute. The housing market for a new home is in the 300's. My parents bought their house 24 years ago for 80K. It's worth about 300 now (one just like it is on the market for 290, with no new upgrades).

I personally get offended when people just assume West sac is a bad neighborhood. We are a diverse community with large Hispanic and Russian population. We've come a long way in the last 20 years or so. We still have some problems, but they aren't problems that anyother town hasn't dealt with. If you plan on using public schools (I personally don't), we have award winning elementary schools. But, he Junior high and High school I would never reccomend using.

We still have a small town feeling even with the new construction and influx of people. Our two lane road (Jefferson Blvd.) is being transformed into a four lane road, we are getting a new Nugget Market in the area I live in.

If you'd like, PM me with the areas your realtor is suggesting and I'll tell you a little about the neighborhoods. Good luck. Here are a couple good websites:

As far as acupuncture, I honestly don't know if there are any shops here! Sorry about that!

sorry poetmama, definately didn't mean to offend you- just mho. when we visit west sac (which we do on a semi-regular basis), my grandmother talks fondly of some areas/hotels she used to visit quite a bit but are no longer what they used to be. of course no neighborhood is perfect.

cariadanam, the "hot" areas around here seem to be natomas and laguna- although the high schools in natomas are having some probs, the elk grove school district is now larger than sacramento's. personally i think natomas is a beautiful area but a little generic.

No offense taken!
I just get protective about my hometown!!

cariadanam-
West Sac falls in the Washington Unified School District. My mom drives a school bus here, so I happen to know that if you are going to use the special ed school in Davis (perhaps its in Woodland, I can clarify for you if you need...) the students are bused in. She drove a special bus for a while. Good luck with your move, let me know if you need anymore info!

I get offended when people assume it is a bad area, too. We have our problems, just like any other city, but I've never been afraid of the area or the people. The people are fairly friendly around here.

I agree with the schools- elementary are fine (some are better than others), but I wouldn't recommend the junior and high schools. There is a great Charter school not too far away in Natomas.

The special school (Greengate School) is in Woodland. AFAIK Davis has no special ed classrooms - everyone is mainstreamed (or, presumably, busses to Greengate if they need more intensie services). My friend with an autistic daughter is very happy with how things are in Davis.

I have no idea what the situation in West Sac is, though.
