It's a hoax. His first "public appearance" was as one of his famous characters, which any man who looked somewhat like Andy Kaufman could do. I'm afraid Andy Kaufman's fans have been bitten by the same bug that convinces people that Elvis is still alive!

That guy was weird!<br><br>
He did a couple of shows at my university years ago when I was a student. I was involved in the Drama department, so we were tagged to work backstage and help with all the technical aspects of the performances (lights, sound, etc.). To a college student, extra pay is GOOD!<br><br>
Kaufman couldn't keep his hands off the gals working backstage. I mean, breast and bottom grabbing and saying obscene things to them. A couple of the girls actually slapped him, and one boyfriend nearly decked him because of it. He was doing his "Elvis" routine, and singing a romantic song and pointed to a gal in the audience. When she came up to the edge of the stage, he would kiss her, but then stick his tongue in as far as he could. The women did NOT look thrilled with THAT kind of "showmanship." <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/angry.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="angry"><br><br>
I never really "got" his type of humor. I just don't think he was all that talented.
