My mom is trying to get a carseat for when we visit (via plane-- and no, we're not bringing the carseat on the plane, b/c she bought us the tix and only got them for DH and me). She's borrowing from her daycare parents She says she has one that is only for FF, so a year and a certain weight limit required. Then she says a pregnant mother of twins is happy to lend her the extra infant seat she has. I've only ever used my britax blvd, so I'm concerned that my 8 month old DD won't fit in an infant seat by then. She's petite but rather tall. She was like over 15 lbs, maybe 16, and maybe 27 inches, the last we checked....

So, what are the typical limits of infant seats? I'm mostly concerned about that shoulder-height issue as well as her head thanks!!! ETA: Oh yes I will of course check the specific seat but my mom is still waiting to get it from the mother, etc etc... I just wanted to see if there was a way to see if it would likely work/not work, w/o stressing out my mom too much in the process.

NAK sorry

It depends on brand of seat. On average the infant seat is outgrown at 20lbs (for seats like the Graco Snugride, Peg Perego, etc) and 26" or so (though your dd can be longer than that as long as there is 1" of space between her head and the top of the shell). Now if it's a Graco SafeSeat or Britax Companion they go to 30lbs and I don't know how many inches, but a few more and most likely would fit your dd at 8 months. Some kids still fit in those at 2 years old.

The other option, if you cannot find a safe seat to borrow, is to have her pick up a Cosco Scenera for $40.

You could either have her pick up the Scenera that was suggested, or pick one up yourself and use it on the plane. As long as the plane is not full, you can bring the seat on board and use it for your baby. It's much safer that way and will ensure you have a safe seat when you get there. You could bring your Britax too on the plane, but I personally prefer to travel w/ the Scenera since it's lighter and smaller.

When my oldest was a baby, the limit was 27", which he hit at 3 mos. I didn't know then that overall height is pretty irrelevant and the only thing that matter is that they are 1" from the top of the shell, or I'm sure he would have fit in it longer.
We switched from an infant seat to a convertible with my youngest before he got anywhere near the top, because it only went to 20 lbs. and he was 18 lbs. at 4 mos. old.
I think most babies will still fit in even 20-lb. limit infant seats at 27", but it depends on her proportions. Does she have a long torso and/or big head and short legs?

we're traveling on southwest, during the holidays (around new year's) so I'm not sure about them letting us use a seat on the plane. It's an hour flight and she's not likely to go in a carseat w/o screaming, it being a new envoronment and all-- she gets very high strung in crowds indoors. but is the serena an infant seat or bigger? We could always bring it and let them gate check it... I dont' want to do that with my britax b/c if it gets damaged then we would be totally up the creek.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to talk to her about the bigger seat choices
