Pardon me if there's already a thread about this, but I just realized Earth Day has snuck up on me and I don't know what to do for it. Last year we cleaned garbage out of the ditches, so we may do that again.
I'd like to hear what other families are doing.

I don't really have any big plans. I feel bad b/c this is the first year in a long time that I haven't had something planned.

I'm downsizing to a smaller vehicle, and so today I will learn to drive a standard. Does that count? :

We have to clean our yard - not exactly being part of an earth day movement, but at least we'll be outside in this glorious Spring weather.

I am making cloth vegetable bags. You know, to replace those little clear plastic baggies that you put bulk items/fruits/veggies into? I'm making some from broadcloth.

That is a fabulous idea! I just came home from the grocery store and even though most of the stuff was loose, I did use a few plastic bags.

How to you make it so the checkers can tell what is in there? Will you sew in a little window?
Maybe I will see if I have any sheer fabric that I can make a little window out of.

Today is my birthday, so we'll be going to my in-laws for dinner and cake tonight. This morning, I woke up to squeels of delight from my 3 year old, who had decorated a card and picked out a bucket of bath beads all by herself, as her gift to me. As she handed them to me, she said "This is so you can share with me, mommy! Oh, and daddy got you a dress and a hat."

There are festivities downtown today for Earth Day, so I"m going to put on my new dress and hat and we'll take the kids down to check out the sights and see what's going on.

We're members of one of the only free standing pagan "churches" in the country, so Earth Day is always a big holiday for us! We'll be doing lots of yardwork and cleanup of the grounds, then we'll do a big ritual blessing of the Earth, focused on our little spot, then have a big yummy potluck while we watch the kids run around! Ahhhh...

I wasn't going to, as I was going to make bags that could be seen into from the top, then tied after the cashier sees them, but your idea is fabulous. Maybe I'll get some light-gauge clear plastic to make windows. Or, sheer fabric. If only my fabric store had mesh type fabric. I'm nervous about gauzy sheers because I'm not sure how they'd hold up in the wash or with food in them. I think for simplicity's sake, I'll probably just make the bags and inconvenience the clerks .
I do shop at a smaller natural food shop where I don't think they'd mind too much, and would probably just believe me if I told them what was inside.

Also I was thinking these bags would be great for the farmer's markets that start up in a few weeks. I used to just put everything into my cloth shopping bags, but it does get annoying to have all your plums mixed in with all your apples and bananas and strawberries. And the more delicate items always seem to get squished. Keeping them separate in their own bag might be helpful for this.

I wanted to plant my new cherry tree with ds's placenta today, but alas I'm still in the hospital (going home in a few hours though, yay!) so maybe not today...

Instead I think I'll just do some meditation and sit on the porch when I get home and enjoy the beautiful weather and the fact that I'm home. The cherry tree and placenta can wait a little longer, or maybe I can get dh to do it for me today while I "supervise" from the porch. :

I love the veggie bag idea btw, thanks for that! Gonna check into that for my own farmer's market starting up in a few weeks (can't wait!)

the veggie bags sound like a great idea. I've been thinking about that. I also am looking at the resuable shopping bags, our grocery store just came out with som new ones (Superstore). But you know, I looked at them and thought, maybe I don't want something made from recycled pop bottles to put food in, as I don't like putting my food in plastic. Then again, that makes little sense, sinc I currently use disposable plastic ones... I'd like canvas or cotton ones, but the ones I have always end up getting used for kids clothes.

Hmmm... maybe I'll just try to enjoy the outdoors.
