DD (17 months) has really been enjoying the handful of music CDs we have, and today I discovered how great it was to play her music (rather than mine) in the car.

So I want to get more! What are your toddler's favorite CDs? And better yet, what are music CDs that parents enjoy, too?

Just to clarify, I'm NOT looking for lullabyes or soothing, go-to-sleep music. We want to dance and sing along!

Trout Fishing in America and They Might Be Giants are two bands that rock both my and my son's socks off. They have some really clever lyrics.

Honestly, we've got a lot of kids' music, but ds just likes whatever has a beat (and more importantly, whatever is playing when I pick him up and dance around the room to

TMBG actually has a lot of kids' music, have you heard any of it? Do a search on youtube, they also have many videos to their music. Good stuff.

I love Bare Naked Ladies' "Snacktime." We listen to it over and over.

All of the Putumayo Playground CDs are wonderful, especially African Playground and Animal Playground.

We actually really like the Wiggles (sometimes I think I like it more than DS!). I don't like all the CD's, just certain ones. Depends on the songs. I read the band's history on wiki and it's actually pretty cool. yeah, Captain Feathersword!

Also, Baby Jazz (Go Baby Go) is done by professional jazz musicians, it's awesome and if you like Big Band type music you will love it. We only have one CD but the rest look awesome too.

We also really love our MusikGarten CD, it came with the class though I'm sure you can get a hold of them elsewhere.

This one had some pretty funny songs on it (Beethovens Wig): http://www.amazon.com/Beethovens-Wig.../dp/B000F1IPPQ

Here is an older thread with music suggestions, I keep meaning to see if some of them are at my library:

DAN ZANES!!!! Can't stress our love for him enough! Plus, he has quiet a few cds to choose from which is nice.

Father Goose is on a lot of his cds and just released his first solo called It's a Bam Bam Diddly which is really great. My 2.5 year old loves the whole cd.

When my 6 yo was toddler age we really loved Laurie Berkner. DS#2 isn't as interested but her stuff is still great.

My DS LOVES Coldplay (especially Lost!, Lovers in Japan, Strawberry Swing, all from their album Viva la Vida) . Also some John Mayer, Jason Mraz. I like Raffi and Elizabeth Mitchell for children's music but he doesn't have the 'drop whatever your doing and dance' response to it that he does with Coldplay.

Oh boy oh boy! Good topic. Here are some of our favorites, and some we tried and do not like.

Love:

* ELIZABETH MITCHELL!!! She was already mentioned; she is fabulous. She has three of her own albums (You Are My Little Bird, You Are My Flower, You Are My Sunshine) and one co-produced with Lisa Loeb (Catch the Moon). I love every one of them. So does my DS.

* They Might Be Giants. We have Here Come the ABCs and No! My child LOVES these songs and sings them all the time.

*Dan Zanes. We have Night Time and Rocket Ship Beach.

* For the Kids (various artists). We have Volume One but Volume Two is good, too.

*Arlo and Woodie Guthrie, This Land is Your Land. Classic.

* Out of respect for my son... Hip Hop Harry (Jammy Jams). I can't stand it, personally, but he heard it at daycare and LOVES it. Whenever he hears it he says, "I gotta dance!" so that alone merits a place on the list.

* Gymboree's Broadway album. It's just a collection of Broadway tunes that are appropriate for children, but it's a good collection of original recordings. We're both actors, though, so this is kind of mandatory for us.

* Also... the Broadway soundtrack to [title of show]. This is actually in NO WAY appropriate for children, but it's by far my son's favorite album. We turn down the parts with the naughty words.

Do not love:

* The Johnny Cash Children's Album. I really wanted this to be fabulous... alas, it is not.

* Sara Hickman's various children's albums. The songs are just not very good.

We just started listening to AudraRox and Kelsey Friday, but I haven't heard enough to form an opinion yet.

The funny thing is that all of TMBG kinda sounds like kids music, so it's a really natural fit for them.

My DD's fav is "Ballet Classics for Kids" (I am a ballet teacher), followed by Raffi's Greatest Hits, a compilation of Disney Movies songs done for Musical Theatre and a Kathy Naiman CD I have only ever been able to find at our library.

A collection of Bach harpsichord pieces, and a Tito Rodriguez CD, and a Doc Watson Family CD are my son's current favorites. He also likes Marvin Gaye and Will Oldham...I base his approval on whether he claps after the songs (Bach), or whether he starts dancing (all the others). Oddly enough, he has shown little interest in the "kid's" music that we've checked out of the library.
