DS is getting finger foods now (no more "baby foods") but I'm wondering what I can NOT feed him. He's just getting veggies and fruit that I've prepared for the family..spices and all. I know honey is a no-no, egg whites...what other foods can he NOT have?

I made a list of no-no foods in case dh is ever home alone with dd. I may be going overboard but here's a list of commonly allergenic foods that my nutritionist friend helped me compile:

~Eggwhites
~Shellfish
~Honey
~Peanuts (she advises holding off until 2, she says she's heard too many stories of kids going into anaphylactic shock)
~Soy products
~Corn products
~Wheat
~Strawberries

Also, FWIW, one of my friends just gave her seven-month-old mangoes and he broke out in hives.

i give my 8m old dd everything i eat. just a teeny tiny bit. her father and i aren't allergic to anything and neither our are families. so we really aren't worried. if she were to have an allergic reaction we would definetly stop. but for now nothing has happened and she loves everything we eat. i heard honey is okay if it is cooked. about the peanuts i heard the other day they recommend giving small tastes, so they become use to it and less likely to be allergic. only thing she hasn't ate on the list is honey, shellfish, egg whites and soy products.

I give wheat and strawberries do my kid and I know that I was taking a chance, but he's been fine.
I've heard mixed things about soy, though, because of the hormones in it. my ped warned me not to give too much to my ds sine it has estrogen in it.

We're converting here to finger foods almost full time too! It's quite a transition!

In addition to all the good advice already, I would stay away from anything that is a choking hazard until your babe gets the hang of eating. For example: all nuts, raw carrots and other hard veggies, whole grapes, etc. Also, one thing I really had to watch with both of my kids is them trying to stuff way to much in their mouth at one time!

My dd eats strawberries but I scrub the outsides of them really good to clean them and that takes off most of the seeds. I don't know about no dairy, I let my dd have yogurt. She also eats some of my eggs (scrambled) when I have them. I don't let her have honey, peanuts, shellfish (gross anyway), or anything hard that isn't meltable like a cracker.

We didn't do any raw honey until a year, but we did buy products that listed honey as an ingredient. My DH and I aren't allergic to foods so my children both ate what we ate when we felt they were ready. Both my children ate lots of berries at this age, but pineapple was way too acidic and would give them both diaper rash. I didn't give them dairy, but then again, we don't do a whole lot of dairy anyway. I also didn't give them peanuts, but I would give them other nuts/nut butters. I was worried about them choking on certain foods, so I would either cut it up so tiny I would be sure they wouldn't choke on it or cook it till mushy. We don't do hotdogs, but I've heard of children as old as three choking on them. Probably wouldn't give them popcorn at this age either because I would be afraid of choking.

I didn't know about the popcorn thing. DS#1 has had popcorn since he was probably a year and a half. Is it just that it's a choking hazard?? He's always loved it sprinkled with nutritional yeast

I only ever avoided chocking hazard foods....peanuts, hot dogs popcorn....
My girls both got everything else by 9 months. We have no allergies so I wasnt worried.
Olivia loves strawberries, and Peanut Butter is a staple in our house.

I say if your comfortable giving it to him go for it. Just make sure it isnt small enough to choke on.

according to my visiting health nurse, it is, she said its because its the same size as their windpipe, and the kernals also cause that choking feeling.

No hotdogs until over 3? Why? I have not heard this before. I have heard to limit hotdogs due to their low protein content and because they are highly processed (and when you think about it kinda gross) and to cut them in half to avoid a choking hazard, but ds has been eating hotdogs since he was about 18 months. oops.

It is my understanding that certain dairy is ok. Plain yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese...just no milk yet. My dd has enjoyed plain organic yogurt for a while. I also give her some of the hard, raw, Italian cheeses. As far as hot dogs go...I'll be keeping my dd away from those as long as I possibly can...

She does love grapes. I use to peel them and cut them in bits, but now I just cut them and she does really well. She does have 6 teeth, so that helps.

I didn't know that about strawberries! My 10mo DS has been eating them and other berries for about two months, he loves them! He loves oranges, too.

I pretty much only avoid choking hazards, and regular milk, peanut butter, and honey.

As for popcorn, we break off tiny peices without the kernel part for DS. Another one of his favorites!

I was told by my home visiting nurse that its because of the size of them and the skin.....BUT if you can take the skin off and cut them into smaller peices that arn't round, then its alright.
