Ds (and all the 4th and 5th graders at his school) is being taken Christmas shopping by high schoolers from one of the local high schools. The high school kids have raised money to give each child a $20 gift card to spend on their family.

I've got a pretty good idea what ds should get dd (a Webkinz), but that would only leave about $8-$10 for dh and me. I'm completely stumped as to what to suggest for ds that costs $4-$5 that would make a nice gift for each of us. Or a joint $8-10 gift for that matter.

Part of the exercise is to spend within your limits, so I don't want to send more money with him. (And most of the kids at his school come from families that can't afford to send more -- dh and I will take him shopping later with gift cards he got for his birthday.) So, it really does need to stay within the $20 limit.

Suggestions? Before 7 am tomorrow?

The dollar spot has stuff like holiday socks, lotion, coffee, chocolates, tote bags, etc. for $1 - $2.50. I would imagine he would find things there and it would limit the wandering the store trying to spend the money phenomenon.

Picture frame, or maybe a picture frame ornament that you can put a pic of the whole family in. A scrapbook/picture album for pics from this year. A special ornament that he picks out for each of you to remember this Christmas by.

I'd let him choose, rather than asking for a specific item, but I might make suggestions like special Christmas ornaments, photo album, etc as thtr4me says. And maybe chocolate.

(actually, I would be all sneaky and make a suggestion for dh, and then put dh up to making a sneaky suggestion for me, because I overthink these things)

I will let him choose, but they only have 45 minutes to shop, and I can see him dithering over one $5 gift and not having time for another. If dh were home (he's out of town this week), I'd have him make a sneaky suggestion for me. As it is, I've made suggestions for both of us (Christmas ornament, christmas socks, christmas decoration for me; soccer something, christmas ornament or chocolate for dh). He can have some choice, but it'll give him some guidelines.
