What can I feed my pukey-boy?

641 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Ruthla
This morning, DS threw up what looked like curdled milk all over my bed, then I gave him a bath and he napped on the bedroom floor.

After waking up, he complained of thirst so I gave him a little apple juice. It didn't stay down.
I wish he was still nursing! What can I give him so he doesn't get dehydrated?

to you Mama and your ds. I recommend the BRAT diet: Bananas
Rice Applesauce Toast. These are foods that stick to your insides and help with both vomiting :puke and diarrhea
. I hope your little one feels better soon!

I am with you today! My dd is having a hard time keeping anything down...she hurled at the kitchen tble this morning. I too, wish she was still nursing. However, she has kept down lemonade and crackers. Good luck.

Sorry about the triple post...my computer is so slow today. It must have gone through after I tried to make it stop!
I guess stopping double and triple posts once they're started is about as hard as stopping puke that's started to come out!!!

don't worry about food.

give him little sips of watered down juice or flat ginger ale (ginger is soothing to the tummy). our son tends to suck down a lot at once with a straw, so we had to stop him after just a second or two when he was throwing up. offer sips every 10 minutes or so. if an hour or two or more passes before he throws up again, then he is probably staying hydrated enough. you can even offer the sips on a teaspoon so he knows only to have a little bit.

there has been a digestive virus going around our area here which our naturopath says has been taking 4-5 days to clear out totally. the pukeys only lasted a day and a half at our house, and then he started eating small amounts of food and drinking lots the next day and then eating and drinking normally the day after. the runny poops began the day he started eating again and lasted over 3 days. don't know if it's the same virus-type thing where you are, but just wanted to let you know about ours...

to you and your pukey boy, mama...

Yep...and poor Julia lets out an "OOHHH" before each puke. At least we get the warning!

Well, he tried to nurse, but there isn't too much left. Ugh, I feel so powerless- a few months ago I could have nursed him on demand and not worried about keeping him hydrated!
I second the small sips.

But I would like to add that when I have ever had the pukeys, we take homeopathic oscillococcinum and they go away so I can drink. We usually stop puking after the second dose. Do you have any around?

Awww, hope you're both feeling better soon!
He's kept a small amount of water down- and now he's sleeping again.
I was going to suggest the BRAT diet, as well as small sips of water or tea. Juice may be have too much sugar if diarrhea is an issue.

Also, even if he gets drops of breastmilk, it is really the best thing. It willl be absorbed by his gut easily, help to restora the bacteria flora, and yout immunities will pass through to him.

Hope all is well soon!!!
How about fruit popsicles? Ds loves popsicles and they are eaten slowly (kind of like taking small sips of liquid.)
Just wanted to say that EVERYONE is getting this! It is going around the whole country right now, and it is awful. We all had it this week, and I swear I have never felt sicker than while in the throes of it.

I just offered my kids small sips often, and even though they did indeed hurl afterwards, they kept a little down. It was all over in about 48 hours. We were left incredibly weak though (from vomiting and dehydration) so make sure your little one sleeps a lot and takes it easy.

HUGS to you mama.
He's been sleeping plenty, and also peeing plenty, so I don't think he's dehydrated. I'm just getting so sick of the vomit laundry!!!

Ugh. Passover is in less than 2 weeks and I have so much work to do until then! Being stuck home with pukey-boy isn't helping.
I just got back from the store (wow! An entire half hour to myself!!) and he's eating lemon ices now. I'm praying he can keep this down!!!
hope so, too, mama... has he been interested in drinking stuff more? that was the first sign we noticed when our little one was getting better. hope the pukies are gone for him and that the sickness passes by the rest of your family...

I think this has been so bad this year because a lot of us had a mild winter. Never got cold enough to kill all those nasty little bacteria that cause these things! Healing vibes to all the pukers out there!
Ugh. We both napped for a while, now he's awake and crying because I won't get him cheerios in a bag (he just had some corn flakes in a bag and a little water. I don't want to over feed him.)
