What can I take for ringworm?

869 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Beeblebrox
Turns out I've got ringworm, joy. I've been using cream, but new spots and clusters keep appearing and in places I can't always see ( my back ), so I'm worried that I won't be able to get rid of it with cream alone. The doctor wanted to start me out with a low dose cream since I'm breastfeeding and check back with her. What would be safe to take during breastfeeding to get rid of this? I want to be armed with information so if she tries to tell me to pump and dump, supplement, etc. I'll know my *real* options.

TIA

Antifungals are used to treat ringworm and these are typically very safe while breastfeeding. Diflucan is an oral antifungal that is used to treat breastfeeding women all of the time. Always check to make sure once you are given the prescription. You can always tell your MD about Dr Hale's book and website.
Grapefruit seed extract is a highly effective treatment for ringworm and it is all natural. Ds had ringworm about a year ago and I rubbed a drop or 2 of GSE onto the spots a few times a day and it was gone in days.

Did you use a carrier oil?

Thank you for mentioning the diflucan pp!
I used this salve from my local herb store. When it was really bad, I mixed a drop or two of tea tree oil in the salve in my hand before applying it. It worked very well for me. I was not nursing at the time, so you should ask to be absolutely sure about the safety. I think as an ointment it is probably fine.

I didn't use a carrier oil, just put 1 or 2 drops directly on the skin. But I used a carrier oil to heal his chickenpox and it was very effective. I did 10 drops in 1 tbsp carrier oil. I guess since the ringworm was just a few tiny spots I chose not to use the carrier oil.
I second the GSE, it saved my life when I had an overwhelming case of ringworm in Guatemala. Also, raw garlic works.
What happens if I miss a few spots ( since I can't see them all )? Will it come back even worse? I know I'm getting into the realm of non-breastfeeding questions, but that is why I'm wondering if I need to take an oral medication rather than relying on topical treatment.
