Well, let's see. There are several options

Right now I am recommending the new Graco Safeseat I. In fact, we just replaced our old Snugride. I am VERY excited about this infant carrier.

It goes to 30 lbs and roughly 32 inches, meaning the majority of 12 month olds (and often times 18-24 month olds), still fit in it. It has an adjustable recline, so you can sit your older babies and toddlers upright like in a convertible. EPS foam, and a nice, solid design.

The base has a seatbelt lock off that makes seatbelt installation SO EASY...even easier than LATCH installation, and you don't need to worry about the belt loosening or the shoulder belt pulling up on the side of the base.

Yeah, that for us too! We have this seat in "french roast" and it is very nice looking too
. I liked it because it went up to 30lbs and 32inches long....I wanted to be able to use it for as long as possible..and I am thinking this babe might be VERY long...

I didn't know all of the other stuff..but it makes me even more glad that I got it

--We also have a Britax seat for later..but I am hoping to use the safeseat for as long as possible...the Britax is super cool looking but SO huge! (it does last FOREVER...but, still)

My IPs went for the Britax infant seats. They already had one, and so just picked up another.

Not #1, it does not have a front harness adjuster. The Peg is really nice, but really heavy and I have a hard time w/ the price.
The Combi is nice too, but I have little experience w/ those.

We have the Graco Safeseat, but would get the Chicco Keyfit30 if I were buying now.

I was going to order the Britax Companion, but I may just get the Britax Marathon and wait and see. Since we're having a homebirth, if baby is smaller than we expect, we can go out and get a bucket seat quickly at Target.

But I really think baby will be 9-11 pounds. I would be surprised if it's only 8 pounds or less! At 9-11 pounds, the Marathon should be just fine. Should I have to buy a cheaper bucket seat, we'll deal with that. But I like that the Marathon goes to 65 pounds, so one seat is all we need.

**** YOU SHOULD NOTE ****
If you buy a Britax, you should buy it early and let it off-gas for a few months. They're one of the more toxic ones, but are also a GREAT seat. So by giving time for off-gassing and maybe washing the cover, I feel confident I am picking a good seat.

We were lent a Britax Companion. My personal goal is not to drive the baby anywhere for a few months -- I found a family doctor walking distance from the house, and I will see if I can keep everything else under a couple of miles / get cycling set-up with safety features to satisfy DH? But perhaps DH will be talking us into car-rides driven by him. And I do hope to go to the airport in December.

Wow, thanks for all the great responses! I've saved up the money now and am shopping online today. Any last minute suggestions? We've always had Britax for our regular car seats, but not for infants. Last one I had was an Evenflo--it was fine but didn't last too long (baby got too big).

Do you guys think it's really better to skip the bucket altogether and just get a reg. seat? I just want the baby to be comfortable in the first few months. The offgassing does bother me too--anyone know any more about this?

My babies have all been between 7lb 4 oz and 8 lb 4oz, so I am not expecting a huge baby.
