We're thinking of getting the one that tinybirdsorganics.com sells. At $199 it's the cheapest "natural" one I've seen.<br><br>
I'm really uncomfortable with all the chemicals and flame retardants in regular mattresses. I found out yesterday that CA has banned PBDE's (flame retardants) but it's not in effect yet. Which makes me even more frustrated because any natural mattress sites I look at say they need a Dr's note to ship to CA <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch"> You'd think CA would make it as easy as possible for people to start buying better mattresses!<br><br>
The other option I was looking into (and haven't found much yet) is a cover that would shield Baby from the toxic chemicals. Anyone know of such a thing?

has anyone heard of a special wrap to wrap a reg. mattress to protect from the chemicals? How about the baby positioners?? Are those safe?

I don't use a crib, but we've now (Finally!!) got all the mattresses in our house in latex. I love how "real" it is, just one big piece of foam (and not an off-gassy kind), and the crib mattresses are pretty inexpensive. We bought our last two on ebay, and I've been very satisfied...they even came with removable covers, so if the girls had an accident or got sick, we could take off the cover and wash it.<br><br>
Latex mattesses don't have any flame retardant chemicals added. I didn't see anything on ebay just now, but you might try later or email someone selling mattresses on their...we've used the seller eurosleepforless (they even have a phone number, which I've called) for our last two. HTH!

We've seriously looked at the <a href="http://savvyrest.com/" target="_blank">http://savvyrest.com/</a> mattresses to replace our old and worn out mattress. So far we don't have any "clean" mattresses in the house, but I console myself that they are all well off-gassed by now, at least. Not perfect, though, I'm sure.<br><br>
We're considering getting a second bed for our second DS (that is, allowing them to sleep separately rather than together), and I'm not sure what to do. The latex mattresses look fabulous but are SO expensive, especially in the small sizes, it seems. I can justify the cost of a king, but with a twin being just half the cost, it makes my head spin!!

Very very interesting website with tons of great information. I actually read the book while my first was little and it makes a lot of sense to me. Now I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but this one I believe in.

I purchased a regular crib mattress at babies R us and I hate it! I can't wait to replace it with a Savvy Rest latex mattress. I saw you posted about them Heather B. I think they're great. My chiropractor carries them. She bought one for her son when he graduated to a "big boy bed" and the quality, comfort and "green" factor just can't be beat. Their customer service is awesome. If any of you all are interested, she's in New Hampshire and her website is thehealingroomchiropractic.com All her contact info is on there.

We're going to side-car a crib for co-sleeping. So we needed to get a crib mattress.<br><br>
Friends of ours have a regular one they were going to throw out, as it's 5+ years old, has gone through two kids. I'm telling myself it has off-gassed every badness possible in those years, and will work for us.<br><br>
But then, I've never seen it. We may, in the end, end up shelling out some dollars for one of the models mentioned above.<br><br>
Wait, wait!<br><br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">

This site says quite plainly "The danger of cot death increases as a mattress is re-used from one baby to the next."<br><br>
Oh my. I guess I'm in the market for a real mattress!

I researched a lot and decided on this one. I also got an organic mattress for our co-sleeper. I decided to spend my 'extra' money here and get a cheap stroller/ used swing etc.<br><br><a href="http://www.naturepedic.com/products/mattresses/organic_crib_mattress.php" target="_blank">http://www.naturepedic.com/products/...b_mattress.php</a>

It's driving me nuts that I can't find the brand of the one we got - we were lucky and a store near us had two left on closeout for 50% off, so we got the 100% natural latex one for $250. I'm still trying to figure out what to do for the bassinet that we're going to use when she's in our room with us.<br><br>
I've seen new ones in the $250 range with the non-vinyl waterproof cover.<br><br>
Now we just need one for us, too... We really need a new mattress, but I didn't want to get one while I was pregnant because we can't really afford an organic one for us, but I don't want use a non-organic one while breastfeeding or while she's sleeping in our room with us either. The queen and king ones are thousands of dollars.

That is the same one we bought! Love it!<br><br>
My whole take on the expense aspect: to avoid all those harmful chemical in my tiny baby's lungs is worth the cost alone, especially when you consider how much your little one sleeps. also, the crib dh made will easily transform into a toddler bed and use that same mattress for a few years.<br><br>
It will also last long enough to make it through a couple of kiddos, so that may appeal to the cost-concious.<br><br>
After reading extensively about the mattress wrapping, etc. I decided that the mattress was well worth the investment.

Here's another place that does organic, natural, custom-made mattresses:<br><br><a href="http://www.anaturalhome.com" target="_blank">www.anaturalhome.com</a><br><br>
Their crib mattresses are $199, plus $25 for the doctor's prescription.<br>
They are made locally to me. They have 5 Amish families who make them (one family specializes in the crib mattresses). You can get any size, so if you have a co-sleeper or a baby bunk, they'll do that, too,

We bought a mattress before we found out about all the chemicals & stuff, so we decided to wrap it. The wrap was only $30 and it got here in about a week.<br><br><a href="http://www.eves-best.com/babesafe-mattress-covers.htm" target="_blank">BabeSafe Mattress Covers</a>

We have pretty much decided to go with the naturepedic mattress as well. Does anyone have this one? Is it really hard? Just wondering.<br><br>
luvmybean: Is it hard to cover the mattress? After you cover the mattress with this item what else do you put on the mattress besides regular sheets?<br><br>
Thank you <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">
