What do chipmunks do for a living?

654 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Sherry
My dh made a raised bed this year. Everything is growing so well! We live in suburbia, btw. We have bees, birds, some frogs and one wild rabbit. The rabbit was nibbling on the stuff in the raised bed (he ate our sunflower seedlings :-( ), so dh put a little fence around it and some bloodmeal; it seems to be working.

I have discovered one little chipmunk that has moved in, however. He has made a couple of shallow dips in the bed's soil and he seems to like sitting under a massive tomato plant. Everytime I look out the window, it seems like he is sitting under this huge tomato plant in the raised bed.

Does anyone know what the heck chipmunks do for a living? Is he trying to burrow (do they do that?) in the raised bed? Will he eat all our stuff? Should I try to gently encourage him to leave? If so, how do I do that in a humane way?

Thanks!

Chipmunks are hired by civil engineers for job security. They destroy your foundation so you have to hire and engineer and some workers to fix it.

They will eat your garden. Do not be decieved by the cute faces. There was a very good reason Donald hated Chip and Dale.

I would not encourage them to hang out in my yard. While I believe all creatures are a necessity, some of them are not as welcome as others.
Oh crap!
Ok, does anyone have any ideas of how to humanely evict my new chipmunk? *runs off to Google*

I can lend you my nephew and my dog. they are a crack chipmunk hunting team.

Sad story: My dog was chasing the stupid chipmunk jerks around the yard, and got one trapped in a stack of sheet metal. My nephew jumped on said metal, squishing the chipmunk, and was sooo mad when grandma let the dog keep it, instead of him. Ew.
Chipmunks are jerks, they throw pinecones at my dog, eat the tomatoes and are just gerally a nuisance. We didn't have them at my parents farm until last year, luckily, when the fires chased them out of their standard homes.

We have a whole squad of 'munks in our yard. They are industrious little things. They've really gone into overdrive since our Labrador has been gone....I think they have their little beady eyes on my tomatoes
: So far, so good though

yep, chipmunks are cute but you dont want them anywhere near your garden. you can set out a hav a hart trap to trap them humanely, and then release them in a park far far away.
