I've always been a cereal or toast kinda girl with the occasional oatmeal or cream of wheat. Now that my blood sugar has gone all funny on me, I really need to lay off the carbs for breakfast. I ate mixed nuts with a little milk during my pregnancy because it kept my sugars under control, but I got sick of that real quick. What do you eat first thing in the morning? I need ideas.

I'm no help if you want to cut back on sugar & carbs.

I eat whatever is handy...usually snack-food such as brownies, cookies, chips, whatever.

I always have a Mountain Dew to wash it all down with as well...I can live on Mountain Dew alone!

You may get more replies in the Healthy Eating forum but...

I've NEVER been one to eat breakfast foods for breakfast. Even when I was young I'd find I'd be starving in under 3 hours and at school especially if our lunch wasn't scheduled until after 1, I was stuck feeling sick and hungry for several hours.

I'd usually have leftovers for breakfast or a frozen dinner if there weren't any leftovers. Stuff that made up my breakfast was usually something like lasagna, soups, salads, cheeses, or anything that wasn't what passed as breakfast food. (I did occasionally have breakfast type items as afternoon snacks, because I *do* like some of that stuff in small doses, just not for breakfast)

What I had for breakfast this morning was a sausage soup with tomatos, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and a bit of sausage that my MIL made. I froze it in little soup bowl sized containers so when I want one for breakfast I just plop it out of the container into a saucepan and heat it up.

Just try not to limit yourself to things that are traditionally for breakfast.

I typically try to eat something that contains protein, as otherwise I end up starving! Sometimes that's an Amy's breakfast burrito - black beans, tomatoes, potatoes, and tofu - or sometimes it's 8 slices of veggie bacon and a yogurt (this morning). I try not to stick to traditional breakfast foods - anything that contains protein will do!

This morning it was scrambled eggs & toast. On any given day though, it will be yogurt and fruit, or oatmeal and fruit, or foods that aren't considered a breakfast food. Sandwich, veggies with dip, baked potato.

I recently added millet to my breakfasts to replace my oatmeal. I add Earth Balance, thanks to a mama on this board, and agave, instead of honey b/c it doesn't spike blood sugar. I'd be interested in what others are eating, and what to give a dh rushing out the door!

Okay, you asked what we eat... here is what I typically eat:
*goats milk or soy yogurt w/ some flax meal and honey stirred in -or-
*2 slices Natural Ovens lo-carb bread w/ Earths Best & some raspberry preserves
*a fruit smoothie w/ spirulina & hemp oil added
*an apple sliced w/ some almond butter

Now here are some ideas that may be better for you in regards to blood sugar:
*miso soup w/ tofu added
*a couple eggs (omlette, scrambled, over easy, etc)
*scrambled seasoned tofu
*breakfast burritos
*whole grain toast w/ nut butter
*quinoa or millet w/ tamari & sesame seeds added
*plain yogurt
*tempeh "bacon" strips (have w/ eggs, toast, etc)
*Gimme Lean (soy) breakfast "sausage"

Check out a macrobiotic cookbook for some great low-sugar breakfast ideas, or even some of the Zone Diet , Atkins Diet, or South Beach Diet books for protien-rich/low-carb breakfast recipes.

Kashi Go Lean Crunch. It's so yummy! High fiber and soy protein, too. And it keeps me full for a long time, which I've never really experienced with cereal before. It gets a big
from me.

breakfast is my favorite meal and I eat hardy, here are a couple of "sample" bf's of mine

2 hard boiled eggs (breakfast pork slices or other thinly sliced meat that needs to be cooked and is fat trim (NOT BACON)
1 slice of toast((bagel or english muffin) with honey or apple butter.(can't have peanut butter while nursing since ds is allergic, but 1 TBS sunbutter (made with sunflowers) is yummy alternative)
1 apple ( or pear, nectorine, few slices of cantalope/melon or tomato)
before ds I ate either cottage cheese or yogurt too but he seems to react when I eat those.

black coffee or green tea and water

NOW on a rushed/lazy day I'll eat

1 cup cornflakes
1/2 cup rice milk
apple/banana ect

coffee/tea/water

in your case I'd keep a stash of hard boiled eggs, "breakfast meats" that need to be cooked up like those think pork slices, beef roladine (sp) slices, chicken tenderloins and eat about 2-3 oz max (2-3 hard boiled eggs or 2-3 slices of meat) skip the carbs, eat a fruit, have a dairy(if you can) and drink your water and add flax seed to your yougurt

I eat 3 eggs over easy with cream cheese on top every morning.

It's easy to make, very lo-carb/hi-protein (perfect for my hypoglycemia) and i have absolute zero food creativity in the mornings. For some reason i dont get sick of eating the same thing--maybe bc if i eat that everyday, i know i'm good until lunch time and i dont have to worry about crashing bloodsugars.

There are a zillion lo-carb breakfast ideas here

i like to have eggs for breakfast or a smoothie (almond milk is generally the base and peanut butter/bananas or i'll do almond milk and strawberries---i'm in a rut with these smoothies cuz they are yummy)
i will eat leftovers as well. tomorrow morning i'm going to have black beans, scrambled eggs and some of my leftover veggies (kale, turnips, and carrots) so i guess i don't always stick to traditional breakfast foods either. i am not currently eating grains but when i am i will eat a bowl of soaked oats (they are more sustaining than when not soaked, IMO) and i have tried amaranth a few times now and i've finally started to like that, too.

Whatever looks good. I used to always grab a bowl of cereal and toast, but then I started really listening to my body. Now I don't eat until I know what I want. This morning I had veggie-filled tortellini. Sometimes it's eggs. Sometimes garlic hummus with Akmak crackers. Or leftover pizza. Or a smoothie. Sometimes I'm surprised by what looks good. My body's much happier (and thinner) since I've started listening to it.
