I was hoping you wise women could help me. I have been researching prenatal vitamins and have come across DHA supplements. Although I can find many place from which to purchase the supplements, I am having a difficult time figuring out what they contain and why a pregnant woman should take them in addition to prenatal vitamins. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Go to Costco and get yourself a really big bottle of the Nature's Way Cod Liver Oil supplements. Cheaper, and does the same thing. It helps the baby's neuropathways form better, I think I remember reading...and also something about eyesight. It'll help your immune system, and your cholesterol and any other type of inflammation you can think of in your own baby. But you really shouldn't bother with the "DHA" supplements that have gone "commercial"...all it is is cod liver or flax oils in a more expensive box! You might try the nordic naturals ultimate 3-6-9, too, if you can get your hands on it. Much more expensive, but a more balanced blend of oils. My kids take it b/c of asthma, and it makes a HUGE difference!

I recommend Nordic Naturals over other brands. I was reading on another board a while back that they break down the mercury MUCH better than non-norweigian brands.

no, but the cod liver oil will give you cod liver gas<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
I used the DHA with my last baby and must say she is the smartest and cutestest baby <i>I've</i> ever met! I only did in n the last 3-4months of the pregnancy bcause I didn't think of it sooner.<br><br>
She's 15months and acts and speaks and holds herself like an "average" 3-4yrold. I also felt that pregnancy went later because of the suppliments, to her benefit.

The reason it is helpful to take them is because the modern diet in many places has the animal products coming from grain-fed animals (meat, milk, eggs) and so the diet becomes relatively deficient.
