We have a Sunshine Kids Monterey for my seven year old. It cost about three times what the PP payed for the TurboBooster, but I love it because it enables my extremely tall dd to stay in a high backed booster. She is too tall for most boosters, especially since she has such a long torso. This seat should work until she no longer needs a booster of any kind.

Thank you!

Would you(or anyone else) tell me about fit for boosters?I know the signs of readiness to sit in a booster and I know how to check if kids are ready for a seat belt but how do you know if a booster is a good fit for your child?Could a child grow out of a booster and still not be ready for a seat belt?

We love love love our 8yo dd's Sunshine Kids Monterey. The adjustability of both width and height, plus the fact that the head AND torso area is covered in really thick EPS foam makes it worth the money. The Britax Parkway is our spare booster, and it's very nice, too. They are discontinued, but fit smaller children well. Personally, I think that a good quality booster is just as important, if not more, than a good quality bucket or convertible seat. The booster is what is providing the side impact protection in a collision- a cheaply made booster without deep head/torso wings isn't going to offer the protection that one with the deep wings will.

There are crash test videos out there that show the difference in boosters- high back vs. low back and deep wings vs. shallow ones. Really worth watching before you make a decision.

Scroll down the page and you can see crash test footage.

A booster should position the vehicle seat belt so that the shoulder portion is lying across the child's shoulder blade- NOT the neck. For the lap portion, the belt should cross the child's hip bones or thighs (hips are preferable) and not across the tummy at all.

Here is a good article on booster fit and selection ...

http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/...s/default.html

Be sure you are routing everything correctly, the TurboBoosters have red guides for the belt path. I see a shocking amount of booster misuse. When I have kids come in, I seat them and have them (or mom/dad) buckle up. Then I fix the belt path, and talk about keeping belt under the armrests, etc. and check to see how the lap portion fits. Then I hold my hand over the child's knees and have them lean forward until the head comes into contact with my hand. I look to see if the belt stays on the shoulder in the center, slips off (adjust up) or cuts into the neck (adjust down). And I make sure it feeds back into the retractor when they sit up and doesn't stick in the belt guides (particularly on combo seats this can be an issue.) I also talk to the child about how they can feel the belt working to keep them in their seat, and talk about how that is how the belt protects them in a crash, and why it is so critical they keep the belt in the right place and don't lean down, etc. during the ride.

We use a Regent in our car, an Apex in DH's (both harnessed seats) but we use a TurboBooster and a Britax Parkway as back up in Grandparent's/etc. cars. They both fit DD very well at about 43lbs and 5 years old. She is very average for height. DD prefers the harness because she feels safer. She is so use to being restrained, that she really doesn't like the boosters much! Except for the cup holders, of course...

We have a Britax Parkway, Graco Turbobooster, Clek Olli, Combi Dakota, and Britax Frontier.

I'm not a huge fan of the Turbobooster, the only reason we still have it is because my girls have a huge attachment to the Cinderella cover on it! The Olli and Dakota are both low back, my older DD uses the Olli now and LOVES it, it latches in so it stays put and it's nicely padded, she just loves it. The Parkway is youngest DDs seat in DHs car (she rides in it once a month, maybe) and the Frontier is in my truck - with a harness right now. We love both.

We had a Sunshine Kids Monterey but DD isn't ready for full time booster use yet.

WE have one of the more expensive Turboboosters....well, we had the cheaper $60 version - it does have EPS around the noggin.....but DD cried on long carrides that her booty hurt and I didn't blame her - there is like NO padding....so I went back and bought one that had memory foam on the seat and she is SO much more comfy. We use the regular turboboosters in the grandparents car. (I personally think the 'air seat' turbo looks even more comfy - but of course, the Gracos lack in side impact EPS)
