I like it very much . I knew a little girl named Valerie when I was working in a school, and she was adorable, and very spunky too!

If your last name is 1 syllable, and Valerie is 3, I think a 2 syllable middle name would be good, like Valerie Mia, Valerie Iris, Valerie Eden, Valerie Nicole, Valerie Charlotte.... you know... good solid 2 syllable names.

The only thing I don't like about it is the nickname Val. Val is not nearly as cute, and can be used for men and women (Val Kilmer).

I suppose it could happen, but we don't use nicknames for Charlotte or Madeline...

Valerie is adorable! Sweet for a little girl, yet strong and feminine for a grown up.

When it comes to undesirable short forms, I think the parents have quite a bit of control . I have a son called Alexander, and I've never called him or allowed anyone to call him Alex. It just doesn't seem like something I'd name my boy.... (no offense to any people named Alex or parents of kids named Alex, it's nice, just not my thing). So anyways, he knows his name is Alexander, and he politely corrects anyone who calls him Alex. He says "my name is Alexander", and if he's feeling generous he'll offer some of the short forms we call him at home (Xan, Xanny, Xander....)

So don't let the possibility of Val prevent you from enjoying Valerie. It's a good name in my opinion.

I just came across this!

My mom's name is Valerie and she has a one-syllable middle name (Jean), her maiden name was one syllable, and so is her married last name.

A friend of mine from high school named his daughter Valerie Rose. They, too, have a one syllable last name, and it sounds just fine.

Hardly anyone calls my mom Val; it's always Valerie.

I knew several girls in college by that name. One went by "Val".

The joke in my family was that since I ended up being born on Valentine's Day that my parents were going to name me "Valerie Valentine V...". Then they went back to their original choice.

I like the name Valerie. I don't know any young Valerie's which is a requirement for picking a name for me, that it not be too popular. I don't care for 'Val' as a child nick name. A middle mame all the comes to mind is Valerie Valera I know not much help
