Osborn.

it means "divine bear" which is pretty cool (we are all grumbly and like to sleep in caves... a very bearlike family. a bear name would be perfect for our child). i like the nickname Ozzy. what do you think? i searched it on this site to see if anyone had used this name for their child and came up with pages of people misspelling Ozzy Osbourne
, but not a lot of actual baby names.

the only thing that is stopping me putting it firmly on our list is that our first son has an uncommon first name that is also the last name of a musician. (cant tell which one, DH asked me not to use real names online.) its not something super obvious like Marley or Lennon, maybe one in five people make the connection right away. but im thinking that as much as i like this name, it might be too much to have two kids with musician names. too matchy-matchy.

???

Does it flow okay with your last name? That's the only problem with the surnames as first names trend...I know a little girl named Madison McKenzie...pretty name, but hard to tell which is first and last, you know?! Our last name is a noun (Block) so I have to be careful not to use a noun for the first name, too!

2boyzmama....it actually goes well with our last name (which is looooong and "ethnic" and does not sound good with a lot of names that i love). i dont usually go for the last names as first names either (our first son's name does not sound like a last name), but i like this one!

MabMama... part of me thinks it would be kind of cool, too.

AND, FWIW we do give our kids common middle names in case they want to be president someday and need an "out". LOL.

it's a good name - no doubt about that. the only thing i would keep in mind is that people will undoubtedly call him (or he'll want to be called) ozzy at some point in time, for two reasons.

1. the obvious Ozzy Osbourne connection (there's no way around it)

and 2. Osborn has two definite syllables Os-born. the Os doesn't flow or 'link' into the born. Which certainly isn't a bad thing - it's just that Americans always tend to shorten things.

I personally like Osborn AND the nickname Ozzy.

Yeah, if it goes with your last name, it has a significant meaning (how we agreed on our boy name this time is when we found the meaning), you like it AND its nick name...then GO FOR IT!!! And I also like the way it matches with your first son without being too cutesy or rhymey.

One thing I always caution people, though...my mom chose a great name for my younger sister that was perfect in so many way...except that its meaning was "Crash of Thunder" and BOY, did she live up to that name!!!! When my mom was pregnant with my younger brother, she had another perfect name, but it meant "He who cries a lot" and she quickly nixed it, not willing to jinx herself again!
She ended up naming him a name that means "Falcon".

So, beware...you give him a name that you think fits your family dynamic, he might just do exactly the opposite of the name and prove you wrong!!!

Just trying to think of alternatives...sounds like you are on the fence with it.

What about something like Oscar? Similar, but different.

Personally, I don't love Osborn. But its because I don't love the connection that comes to mind instantly - being Ozzy Crackhead Osbourne. I can barely watch the man on TV - its torturous! It is a bad as it was listening to Anna Nicole Smith. Sorry!

I admit I have the same reaction to zenproof, just can't hear the name with thinking of that messed-up musician. And its not a good association for me. I find I am very sensitive to things like that when thinking of names, but then again its hard to find a name that a child couldn't be teased for in some way.

My opinion is colored by the fact that I find the famous Ozzy really, really annoying. I think it has a great meaning and that if it goes well with your last name, and you both like it, then go for it!

HAHA!!!

My maiden name was Masters...now THAT'S a cool last name! And it was easy to match a first name to, almost nothing is bad with it! I mean, I suppose you still have to be careful with noun names (Tanner, Lilly, Hunter) but easier to work with than Block

I think his nickname would very quickly become the full "Ozzy Osborn". It will be the first connection people make with the name. If you're ok with that, then go for it...but personally I wouldn't use it. If you're going to name after a musician, maybe choose one that is looked at a little more positively.

We have friends that have a son Oscar, and they call him Ozzy. Are there any other names that would lead to the nickname Ozzy? Trying to think...

thanks for the input, everybody.

i guess it all depends on whether or not you think Ozzy rocks
. and i will admit that i am a big Sabbath fan... so there it is.

re: Oscar. i think its a cute name but id be more worried about teasing with that one. i asked my two year old who Oscar was and he told me "that yucky man who lives in a garbage can!"

maybe ill look into some other bear names. im really feeling that this little baby wants to be a bear.

Go for it! If I had a boy, we'd have named him Oswald - nickname Oz. DH wasn't wild about it due to the assassination connection............ Osborn solves that little issue.

Do you ever watch Supernatural? The characters on that show are always posing as FBI agents but using rock star pseudonyms ("I'm Agent Geddy, this is Agent Lee"). Your post made me think of that
