I'm teaching myself embroidery right now. I'm working on a little shirt for DS and I want to stitch a couple of words. What is a good stitch to use for lettering?
My vintage machine's book recommends a satin stitch which is a zig zag stitch with length at 0 and width at 3. Use an embroidery hoop to keep the fabric stretched.
For words, not a monogram, I would just use a simple split stitch. I guess it depends on what you want it to look like. A satin stitch for a series of words would take forever.
What I'm talking about would look like the word FRIDAY at the top on this pic:
You don't have to do it any way at all, you can just pick what you like or print something out in a font you like and just make it up, you can mix stitches, you can do anything.
a split stitch is definitely my go to. (Actually, its my go to for everything). A backstitch or stem stitch also works well, though personally I find a split stitch easier to do lettering with.
