I always read that eczema was a sign of food allergies. The chiropractor who does dd's nmt treatments says that it is actually a sign of yeast overgrowth and not allergies. Just curious - have any other mamas found that eczema vanishes when you take care of the yeast. I've found articles stating that yeast can be the cause. Thanks

Mountainmon, thanks for posting this!

I definitely feel that yeast at least plays a role in dd's eczema. I feel that both of us have compromised guts, and that this is making her food sensitivities manifest themselves in eczema (although I think she also has some environmental sensitivities in there as well). I know that when I cleared myself of yeast several years ago to address persistent vaginal yeast infections, MY food sensitivties also abated (as did my asthma and eczema). I was able to each things that I had not eaten in 15 years (chocolate! mmmm).

I'd like to ask a second question of those who have found yeast to be a player in eczema. How did you get rid of it? No-sugar diet plus probiotics? Natural remedies like garlic, oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract? Perscription drugs like Diflucan or Nystatin?

I think that could have been the case with us as well-that yeast could be adding to the problem. However, if there is yeast overgrowth then there can also be "leaky gut syndrome" in which the undigested proteins basically are able to seep through the intestinal wall and get into the bloodstream where they can then aggravate an "allergic" response in the skin and show up as eczema. At least this is the way I understand it.

I try to take my cod liver oil and other good oils (I use Udo's) on an empty stomach, right before I eat, as they are supposed to kill yeast. Then I try to take the probiotics after I eat.

I don't think yeast is the whole story. If I eat dairy (uncooked), dd's face will break out with ezcema. It is really common to not be able to tolerate cow's milk proteins- http://www.naturalchild.com/guest/li...en_palmer.html

We tried all of the stuff you mentioned for yeast and nothing took care of it for good, but dd also has dysbiosis (an elevated amount of bad bacteria in her gut) which makes things worse. Right now she is on the SCD diet - Breaking the Vicious Cycle - (just for four days now) and I am seeing miracles. Jane S. and I are reading the book and discussing it on her thread "are allergies really allergies" if you'd like to join in. Yeast is just a frustrating and at times overwhelming thing to deal with IMO.

I think that, like almost everything else that deals with food allergies, it really depends on the individual. There's no single cause and no single blanket solution. In my son's case, he didn't clear up until all of his allergens had been eliminated; in the last 2 years, the only time he has ever broken out is after exposure to an allergen. Because his diet (and mine) is so limited, we've been able to trace every break out to a specific food.

But, that's our experience. Allergies, unfortunately, are not an exact science.
