What if we went to ob/gyn offices and gave them free stuff with breastmilk slogans all over it. What if we gave moms a real breastfeeding success bag when they left the hospital. What if some of us acted like we were breastmilk reps and showed up at doctors offices once a week to remind them of the greatness of our "product" and to give them an easy to read summary of the latest breastmilk research (since, of course, being busy doctors it is hard to find time to keep up on this info.). Of course this would cost some money but perhaps we could get some pro-breastfeeding businesses like Motherwear and Medela to support us. And one of the most valuable thing that many of us who are stay at home moms have is time. So what do you all think? Is this crazy?

I think it's an absolutely FABULOUS idea!!! I'd also like to see child birthing classes provide breastfeeding in their list of covered items.

Just thought of something though...and this is very cynical. But it's gonna be hard to compete with the formula companies. They don't just offer cute little freebies. I think they give out mucho money to the doctors...scholarships, grants, convention sponsorships...and they pay millions of dollars to the hospital.

We're going to have to make sure our keychains are VERY cute.

I completely agree Dina... it's very hard to compete with big business. Especially big business's that pay congress to keep the truth hidden

Like some of the posters said, we can't compete with big business however we don't need to.
If every one got there local LLL to give out pamplets you could include them. YOu could print off a few articles to include in a gift bag, such as an article about GROWTH SPURTS AND FREQUENT NURSING. Since this is a very common problem where moms think they aren't making enough milk..etc... etc..

YOu could do some inexpensive things like make some notepads that say Breast is Best. Maybe we could get local businesses to donate stuff, Natural businesses might donate money if you are doing it in conjugtion with LLL or something that is tax deductable.

It might be benefical to start at your OB/GYN office, as well as the Ped. Most mothers by the time they come to the ped already have made their choice. We could have the OB's had out the breastfeeding info packages to new mom's. It would be cheaper to start with than a hospital or such.

We could also start a website that has lots of links and doctors could request packages from us.

This would actually be easy to do if we placed several people in charge of contacting different companies and such. Then we could get together and make these goody bags.

Oh you got me all excited now!

THey have some cute ads that are to be run in newspapers and such. Does anyone know if we can print things like that off and include it in our packets?
It has the links and all on it for the www.4woman.org and all that jazz.

I love this idea. I am so dissapointed that pediatritians, OB's, and hospitals aren't more suppotive of bfing. My hospital is pretty great, but I know that many are not. My hospital sent me home with an appointment to have a LC come to my home in 2 days, a number to call for emergency LC help, a sample of lansinoh, a schedule of LLL meetings and leader phone numbers etc...which were all *so* helpful. They did give me an enfamil diaper bag, but it was empty (no formula or "literature")

I will be thinking on some ideas and look forward to hearing more of what others think!

That's great.

My hospital was a bit Jekyl/Hyde about the whole thing. They have a wonderful lactation department...VERY AP oriented. But I think that part is not fully supported by the hospital. I got the formula bags...full of formula. I might have also got a BF bag...not sure. Everything got confused. But when I got home, in the pile, I found a little booklet from excerpts from the Nursing Mother's Companion. In it was a whole section about how bad the formula companies were for giving out free formula to new mothers at the hospital. For the longest time, I thought that booklet came from the Formula companies. I thought it was pretty funny and figured they weren't reading the info they send out. But now I'm thinking maybe that came from the lactation center.

What I want to know is this...If I was labeled as a BF mom and still got the FF bags. Would they send in a lactation consultant to the mothers who already said they were NOT BF. I think it would only be fair....

Of course not...that would make them feel guilty for not wanting to b/f.

Actually, some of the most influential things are the easiest. The best people to target are the ones who interact with patients the most (namely, nurses.) Food always works. So, stopping to drop off a box of Krispy Kremes or whatever with a couple of little trinkets would work. Pens are always in short supply -- and people covet the high-quality ones, with good black ink. I have one (I think, Zosyn) that people are always trying to steal! Stethoscope tags, notepads, lots of things you could do.

This is the kind of thing I was think of. What if the nurses name tag holders said Babies love breastmilk instead of Babies love Similac. That sort of thing.

How about something like this:
stethoscope tags

You could create your own stickers and put them over the ladybug or whatever.

Or these pens (I think you would get more bang for your buck if you got a few nice ones over a lot of cheap ones)

pens
