I am trying to figure out what colors to paint our walls in our new house. For 13 years we have rented with white walls and needless to say we are *excited* to bring some color into our lives.

We haven't chosen the type of paints yet, though I know they will be the "low toxic, low odor" kind.

While I have many ideas for kitchen and living areas, I can't seem to focus on colors for our bedroom walls.

I was thinking it would be nice to have a color that induces relaxation and sleepiness.

Can anyone save me a trip to the library to do color research, and enlighten me?

THanks!!

I'm a big fan of sage green. It's low key and relatively neutral. A lot of different colors match/contrast nicely with it.

Just make sure it isn't mint or hospital green.

Congrats on moving into a new place!

SUPPOSEDLY. . . . . .

orange makes you hungry
yellow evokes strong emotion
blue and green calm you
red makes you feel powerful

SO. . . . . I would say blues and greens. Obviously, light and low impact, no screaming colors. supposedly the reason is that since we all come from watery beginnings, the blues and greens remind us of our origins. Sorta makes sense I guess. I've always done soft pastels for M's room and it seems to be her haven. Guess I've done something right, huh???!!

We painted our bedroom a light turquoise color. Its really beautiful and bc our bedroom is on the shaded side of the house, it always looks cool and dark in their. ITs perfect for naps!

Kind of like this color, but alot lighter.......

We did 3 walls in our living room a deep red, our kitchen is lemon yellow and our family room is done in 3 colors (same yellow, orange and lt yellow) blended to make a fresco look.

After renting for so long, then finally buying a home, that was one of the first things I did, paint the walls!! I love it!

Our room is a light gray on 3 walls and the ceiling and a dark slate blue on one wall and the dormer area. It goes very nicely with our dark furniture. I think you should also take into account how much light the room will receive. This room is at the N so it doesn't receive much sun, I don't know if I would like its dark/sleepy colors if it had a southern exposure.

Ours is a very pinky-purple. Quite bright, but toned down with beige bedspread and window tx. I love it! Very passionate....especially in low light. Funny thing is I picked out the color, and had my Dad paint in while he was visiting. When he finished it, we stood back and realized it was the EXACT color that he painted my little-girl bedroom when I was a child! (except with light pink and white accents for little girls). Weird how that must have subconsciously influenced my choice....

In our bedroom we have a cafe-au-lait color with avocado molding and chair rail. I like it, it goes well with our pine furniture.

ds has three tones with a border. He has a sky blue on the ceiling and about a third of the way down the wall from the ceiling (cathedral ceilings), then there is a space border with deep blue blacks and nice mustardy gold tones, then a slate blue on the bottom part of the wall. The trim is a brighter blue. Sounds garish, now that I'm writing it out, but everybody LOVES this room when they see it.

dd has a light purple ceiling with one wall that same color. This wall has a window in it and has curtains with green, blues, yellow pink and purple. The other three walls, doors, trim and molding are vanilla'ish yellow, very light--I think the color is called coconut--and she has bugs and flowers stamped on those walls in the purple color. Not as cute as ds' room, but she seems to enjoy it.

Next summer I hope to paint our family room with taupe walls and an aqua ceiling.

Have fun! Picking out colors is soooo much fun I think!

We painted our bedroom a Martha color ("Heather") that is a very changeable hue. It's a lavender/grey color that sometimes looks very light or dark, very lavender or grey depending on the time of day and year. In the winter, it looks so amazing it's hard to get out of bed!

We've got all this light maple furniture, and refinished wideboard floors that are honey colored. Taupe accents. It's a very soothing room.

Happy painting!

dd's room is a real light green with a fern green sponged on top, very crisp clean color almost like a granny smith apple or like your sitting in the bushes lol. her duvet when I get done will be peach, her curtains will be tabs (striped) and the main curtain roses with green sheers on either side of a peach sheer. she has pink shelves and a peachy/berry play bench dh is making her which we'll decupage some of the fabric from her curtains on and I'll make a cusion with the striped fabric. (the floral is on the bookends and the striped is her bedskirt) there will be pillows with the scraps.

ds's room (oldest) is the blue room, before it was complete, there will be navy with occasional lime green stripes and his pillow will be the lime green with blue stars

our livingroom/kitchen are open to eachother so are a lovely warm taupy tan color called shady acres. next to whit it's crispy clean and next to cream it's cozy warm.

we haven't decided yet on our room.

soothing colors -- contrast neutrals, periwinkle, lavender. long ago, i had read somewhere that yellow walls were correlated with domestic strife and that always stuck with me like a bad superstition! i really want to paint our walls!

what brands are low-odor but still a good finish & washable?

Oh my.......
:LOL

My head is spinnin' as fast as ever-round and round.....!!!!

No,seriously. I *love* hearing your descriptions! THankyou!!!

I like the idea of the turqouise-sea green, but I also like a lavendar/light purple. Dh is trying to talk me into a light blueish-purpleish color(I am sure there is an artsy name for it?) The floors are light oak, and for now, we have an antique vanilla colored dresser with an oak futon frame that you can't see.

I am not liking the yellow connection to domestic strife as dh has his heart set on earthy/desert tints....cinnamon,mustard-and their variations-for the living/dining areas.

As long as dh is happy with the colors they have, I think we awill go along with the "Benjamin Moore" low odor, low voc eco spec line. I honestly don't know what low voc means(anybody?), but I just know that is the least toxic I have found in our city.

Picking out colors is fun!!!!!Weeeeeeeeeee:LOL :LOL

That color sounds perfect for our bedroom. Are you sure it is called "Heather"? I just searched all over on different paint and Martha type websites...and could not find it.

Thanks for your help!

We painted our bedroom a very light lavender. We have a vaulted ceiling that we painted a much darker lavender to bring it down and create a more cozy feel. It works wonderfully for us. I love it! You can have shades of plum/lavender on your bedding for winter and (for a change) use cream colored bedding in spring/summer. I haven't incorporated that bedding change thing yet, but am thinking about it for next spring.

Funny thing: a few mos after we painted our bedroom, I was reading a health/healing magazine about feng shui and it said not to paint your bedroom lavender (or did they say purple?) unless you never want to have sex again!

Well, I don't think a whole lot has changed in that dept. The article should have said: Never have a child unless you never want to have sex again.

Good luck and happy painting!

Lisa - Go to Sears or K-Mart, and they'll have the paint chip (and that way you'll get to see the real color - not some computer representation). I'm positive it was called "Heather," and her color selection doesn't seem to change much, so I hope it's still available. There were two colors, really close to each other that I debated about for a few months. Went with the greyer one rather than the purpley one.

all of our rooms are wonderful bold, bright colors! but our bedroom is my FAVORITE! my dh is a painter/paperhanger, and his father had a collection of DOZENS of single scrap rolls of wallpaper that were leftover from jobs over the last 40 years.
(they always hang onto them in case the client wants or needs touchups, etc) well, dh raided it and it has some of the most beautiful and unique vintage wallpaper...he brought them all home and put one sheet of each all along our bedroom, so we have about 20-30 different wallpapers on our walls. it is very nice, and so much fun to look at! the rug and blankets are solid beige and deep blue, so it doesnt clash too much (although clashing isnt a concern:LOL ) and when we wake up in the morning, the baby loves crawling over to her favorite strip of this metalic zodiac paper from the 70's, and pointing at the fish or lions!
its also a great way for us to reuse and recycle stuff that would've gone in the trash.

How fun for you! That was the first thing I did too after we bought our house was paint even before we moved in.... it really needed it though as the ppl before us liked the 80's style theme rooms. I painted our bdrm a sage/mossy green and it is the most peaceful room in the house - the boys much prefer to sleep there than anywhere else! Our bathroom is a color called long-john red
and the living room is a camel and creme color

I like the sound of the Heather color... sounds warm and fuzzy

Have a fun time picking colors for your new house!
