On Friday at my 39 week appointment, I had my first internal exam, which found me to be 2-3 cm. My midwife said that I definitely lost my plug, which I thought might be possible because i had had some snotty discharge, but it didn't seem like plug to me, not very thick at all. Well that night I started losing something that seemed like textbook plug--thick, gel like, snotty gobs of stuff. A little blood tinged too, but could be from the exam. I have been losing it off and on since. Then Tuesday I had another exam because I had been having lots of contractions and the midwife stripped my membranes without asking! Which is a whole other thread...but anyway, since then I have been having even larger globs of the mucous, even though, again on Tuesday, she examined me and said i was a good 3 and the plug was definitely gone.

So could she just not know what she's talking about and my plug was still there? Or should I be concerned about infection or something? I've been losing this stuff for about a week.

BTW, no more internal exams for me!

could be your body is still trying to generate more mucus for the plug, but since you're so dialated it just comes out instead of staying in place.

I just lost my plug (or at least a big chunk of it) a few minutes ago. There wasn't any blood, I'll bet that was because of your exam.
