Some of you might have seen my post the past two weeks about DS suddenly changing from 1 yellow poop per day to 6-10 green poops per day. Well now baby had a bit of blood in the feces... what is wrong with my baby? He is still pooping a lot, though not as much as he had been. He is down to 4-8 poops per day now, and some are nice and yellow, but some are still green. What's going on here? Please help me.

there is a difference between blood IN the stool and blood ON the stool. can you tell which? usually blood IN the stool is a darker red - black, as it has been digested. This could be blood from you, if your nipples are cracked, for example (although I doubt at this stage that would be likely), or from baby's gut. The allergy or sensitivity as pp mentioned could also be a cause.

Blood ON the stool is bright red, as it has not been digested, and is usually due to an anal fissure. These are nothing to be concerned about, will go away, and are most likely due to the increased bowel movements or straining.

Green poop can be caused by a virus that the body is trying to process. The green color results when the body digests more quickly then normal.

It is definitely worth analyzing any new foods you have eaten, as well as your regular diet, and possibly cutting some out for a period of time.

hth!

thank you. The blood is bright red, but just spots of it. the stool is still very liquid, not firm, but not really watery, and there are just little globs of red blood in it. I'm really hoping it's not a dairy allergy, I love milk...

My first thought when I read green stool was foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I didn't see your previous posts about the situation so I don't know if you've already explored/dealt with that.

The blood makes me think dairy. I'm sorry. I had to give up dairy as well and it was hard and I wanted it to be anything but that, but now I'm used to it and have found other yummy things to eat instead. If it helps your baby feel better then it's worth it.

see if you can see a small tear in his anus. when my son had one, the dr pointed it out to me because i went there in a panic (had just had a close friend experience lots of blood in her daughters stools so it freaked me out). he showed me the tear, explained the bright vs. dark blood, etc.

you may have to open his anus a bit as they are usually right inside. my thought is that this is the cause of the blood and he developed it because of the unusual stools he has been having.

as for the cause of those, i didn't see you previous thread so i am not sure the exact situation, etc.

i gave up dairy for a while and it really wasn't as hard as i thought. once i got past the first 2 weeks it was easy. and i lost the remaining baby weight plus some to boot! woohooo. there really is a replacement for nearly everything with dairy. if you decide to go dairy free, i can give you a list of diary free butter, bread, etc.

good luck!

hey, you responded to my teething post and I just wanted to say we have golden poops in the norning and green poops in the afternoon.
I read the 'color of the day' poop analysis and that's actually what got me wondering if teething could have begun.

Green, mucousy stool
This can be a result of a virus. Often the only sign we see of a virus is in the green stool. This is evidence of malabsorption in the intestines. Watch for how many days and with what consistency it is occurring. With a virus, it will run its course over a few days and begin to improve.

Another cause of malabsorption in the intestines can be teething. The profuse saliva of a teething baby can cause irritation in the intestines interfering with proper absorption. When babies teethe, we can see lots of drooling. Large quantities of saliva is swallowed which can irritate the intestines causing runny, acidic stools. This can also cause a rash in the diaper area.
