Spam me with your favorite crack prevention and treatment method please.

I have recently gotten psoriasis plaques on my nipples and it's not going well. So badly as a matter of fact that at some crazy early hour this morning, in a tired stupor, I decided I'd wean DD. I changed my mind when I woke up though, no worries but it doesn't change the fact that I'm reluctant to offer the boob cause it hurts me to have her latched on.

I just need to figure out how to keep the skin on the nipples intact. I have a crack on one of my nipples now that goes almost all the way around.

I'm going to put gentian violet on later on tonight, just to try and prevent any sort of fungal thing that might want to settle here.

Not sure if this is intense enough treatment for your case, but I swear by Soothies glycerin gel pads. They are GREAT for healing traumatized nipples. Lanolin also helps keep nipples conditioned.

Hope that helps a bit!

Glad someone posted this thread!!! I wanted to talk about purelan because it made nursing so much better for me. the LC told me to just put a teeny amount on after each time I nursed... I did and after a while I didnt even need it anymore.

http://store.babycenter.com/product/...stage=&pXid=-1

I had very badly cracked nipples with my first daughter. I was in such pain and DD was ingesting quite a bit of blood (her spit up was pink!). The most helpful advice I was given was to soak my nipples in epson salt for 10 minutes at a time, three times a day. It healed the cracks completely up in two days!

I actually saw Jack Newman about this and he recommended a calendula tincture. It worked like a dream and I followed each application with his all purpose nipple ointment. You can get the prescription off his website: www.drjacknewman.com My crack was more like a crater, and it took weeks for it to heal (I also had thrush thrown in for good measure) but the calendula worked like a charm.

My advice is similar to ambersrose. I got it from Kellymom http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...lehealing.html.

A normal saline solution:

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in one cup (8 oz) of warm water. Make a fresh supply each day to avoid bacterial contamination. You may also buy individual-use packets of sterile saline solution.

It healed up pretty quickly, but I don't remember how long.

Good luck

Edited: My advice is more for treatment. I don't know about prevention.

In addition to using lanolin ointment, I swear by a product called Lily Padz. I found that just moving around during the day and holding my son, caused my nipples to hurt even more from rubbing against my bra or disposable breast pads. The Lily padz work great and are much more economical than the disposable. The company says they last 2 months, but I have taken good care of mine and they are still going at almost 6 months. The best part is that I can wear them at night and sleep without a bra. Good luck and hang in there, nipple pain is no fun!

http://www.lilypadz.com/index1.html

My nipples did not heal until DS's latch improved with help from a LC and our chiropractor. I'm amazed ay how well they did heal though, after looking like hamburger for months.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Good for you for staying committed, and please get help if you don't already have it.

it sounds more like yeast than simply sore nipples. i would meet with an MD and get either diflcan tablets or nystatin cream or try the gentian violet. i had recurrent yeast infection on my breasts for months and what finnally worked was 1. meeting with a lactation consultant to help diagnose what was happening and 2. to get an rx for diflucan for a week long treatment- it took more than one dose. if you have never been diagnosed with psoriasis I doubt that's what the peeling is, it sounds more like thrush which can easily be diagnosed by an md if they take a skin sample and put it under a microscope. best luck and healing!

I don't know about cracks, but to prevent soreness I used Ameda breast shells, and they are amazing. They keep your nipple dry and touch-free when you're not nursing.

Oh this is definitely psoriasis. I've had a diagnosis for 15 years now. I was hoping I wouldn't get it on the nipples but if wishes were fishes..

Thanks for all the answers! I'd doing the lanolin, the saline too. I'l have to get some Lily Padz those sound awesome. I gave up on the bra and half my clothes hurt too much bleh. I hope these get better soon!

And that Jack Newman link mentions vasospasm which is what I keep getting now. Good thing it seems pretty easy to treat.

Thanks ladies!
