I just got my scoby today (thanks!) and I'm wondering if anyone uses a jar. I'm going on vacation tomorrow and I want to take it with me. I'm just housesitting and my niece and nephew are going to housesit for me. I trust them with my cat but not my scoby.

Well, cats can mostly take care of themselves

No good advice. I'm in the market for a good crock for my own, been scouring thrift stores. I'm thinking of just buying a 1 gallon sun tea jug at K-mart. I looked at one at a thrift store yesterday... but the tap on it was all cruddy. I fear I'll find that with all such jars at thrift stores, since the taps don't disassemble for cleaning, so if I go for that option, I think I'll splurge and buy a new one.

I use a 1-gallon or 4-liter wide-mouth glass jar for culturing (covered with a paper coffee filter held on with a rubber band), then keep the finished kombucha in the refrigerator in 1-quart canning jars, and store extra cultures folded up in canning jars surrounded by kombucha. The 1-gallon jar had pickles in it, and I got it from my MIL. The 4-liter jars I found at Cost Plus, they're the kind with a glass lid held on with a wire bail, with a rubber gasket that seals it.

I brew mine in a one gallon jar and a 3/4 gallon pickle jar....I place a filter on top and then place the lid back on...I get horrible fruit flies if I leave it open...it brews fine. I store it in the fridge in an old sparkling cidar jar with a plastic lid.

We use a large 4 qt glass mixing bowl. We found it at Safeway (nobody else had anything remotely close
) for like $6. It makes really really big baby scobies too because of the wide opening

love and peace.

I'm using a really big wide mouthed jar with a lift-off lid. My scobies turn out about 10 inch wide. I cover mine with a 100% cotton cloth, which is the same kind of cloth I'm using to make my kefir cheese. I haven't had any trouble with flies with the kombucha even though I have a bunch of fruit flies always around my kitchen waste container for stuff to compost.
