What is your favorite sock yarn?

I visited every LYS and craft store in my area and found slim pickings. If I am going to order on-line, without petting, I want some glowing recommendations.

I am particularly interested in self striping and tone on tone dyeing.

But please let me know your faves, one way or the other.

I am knitting with Opal right now, and really like it
Patons Kroy Socks is nice.

(BTW, I found it at WEBS in Northhampton, MA. It'd be a bit of a trek for you, but it's a good once-a-year stash-building trip.)
i like opal's self-striping.

but, my all time favorite is cascade quattro. it's quite plain, but for some reason, i love it. i'm also partial to dale of norway's baby ull. you can get it in white and dye it yourself.
Lorna's Laces Shephard Sock, far and away. Oh, and I like cascade fixation for cotton socks.
Thanks for all of the replies, please keep them coming

I am now on the lookout for Opal and have been coveting LL Shephard in Jeans for a while so I may just have to buy some on eBay even though I am on a yarn fast until we move (if we ever find an apartment).

What are folks feelings on Wildfoote, Socks that Rock & Toasty Toes?

It's a bit thicker than usual for sock yarn, but I like henry's attic kona super wash. they just came out with a fingering/sock weight kona superwash, and I haven't had a chance to use it yet but all Ihear are RAVES.

Socks that rock rally do rock
I'm not a big fan of wildefoote at all, and haven't used toasty toes so can't comment.

Zen Garden and Lornas Laces are my absolute favs.
I have some Opal and can't wait to use it (it's on sale in several places - 1 skein will make a pair). I'm using Sockotta right now and don't know if the yarn is bad, or if the cotton content is making me nutty, or using the size 0 needles, or the fact that I've dropped stitches 3 times.... it may entirely be user error, but i'm not using it for a while after I finish these socks - I'm switching to the Opal (will be my first time using it) or the Paton's Kroy I have (because I am in LOVE with the colors, and I think they'll look snazzy with my new Keen Seattles
)

Have you seen the socknitter forums: http://socknitters.com/phpBB2/viewfo...7f8f1017ca8718

I hadn't thought I'd been to the socknitter forum before but there I was listed in the "Users browsing this forum" line-up. I guess I need to spend some more time over there. LOL

If I'm going to do self-striping socks, then I'll use either Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn or something ooak and lovely from Schaefer Yarns.

Jaye the Little Knits site is EVIL... I can wait til we move, I can wait til we move, I can wait til we move. Yep a good mantra.

I hate to ask this, but has anyone tried Henry's attic kona superwash? I noticed LTK are offering an option on dyeing it, which looks a bit tempting...
Knittin' in the Shade mentions it in her post.

I like Opal too,

i love, love, luuuuuuuuuuuuuurvvvvvvvvvveeeeeee- Cherry Tree Hill. expensive, yes. Worth it?YES

I have only finished 3 socks in it, and have more for a third pair, but I can't stop buying it
:
My next lace sock with it for MUA will be in the color"lichen".

I would love to try Lorna's. As itiis I have to buy two more skeins of lornas lion and lamb to finish my clapotis. Knit picks is ok, but rather thin feeling.

Yeah, I know that, but I'm a Brit. I can't get to anywhere that I can love and pet and cosset it in person: sod it, I can't touch anything more interesting than Regia in person at the moment. Even Opal has to be mail order. I was hoping for multiple recommendations.

I haven't done many socks (though I have TONS of sock yarn sitting here waiting)... I'm using some Kona superwash dyed by LTK right now for a pair of socks for my DH, and I like it so far.

I have LL Shepherd Sock, too, and I get it from www.twoswansyarns.com -- great prices, and excellent CS. The last time I ordered, she had free shipping for orders over $25 -- not sure if that still stands or not, but it was nice!

I also have sock yarn from Knitting Notions Online. I have a skein of Socks that Rock that I can't wait to get my needles into...

Aimee,
Have you been to Yarns Down Under in Deep River? I haven't been there yet, but if I remember correctly they are listed as a retailer on the Lorna's Laces website.
Not yet. One of the gals from my SnB group recommended them too. I feel a road trip will be in order once we've finished moving.

I get a lot of yarn from Two Swans (she carries my all-time favorite yarn, Jamieson's Shetland), and I heartily agree with everything Meri has said about her. And even better, you can join her "flying needles" club, and everything you purchase (or every yarn review you do & she accepts!) adds points to your account, which you can use for free shipping, discounts, etc. Definitely check out her site!
