I'm trying to decide what all I should buy/bring along on our beach vacation for ds to wear. There is a pool there too. Seems like it should be simple but there are lots of things to consider and I'd like to have as little as poosible. Oh and ds has sensitive skin and has very regular bms that aren't that solid.

Do I need to get a nylon swim shirt? I really don't want ds to wear a ot of nylon. I figure a cotton tee would be good b/c it's not like he's going to go swimming in the ocean and have a heavy t-shirt weighing him down. I would like his skin to be able to breathe.

I do have one of those nylon one piece life jacket-swim suit combo outfits for when we use the pool.

I have the long kind of swim trucks with a built in diaper cover.

I have two swim diapers too I bought, one to wear under trunks/combo outfit and the other is a trunk/diaper combo.

Although I would prefer barefoot I did get swim shoes too b/c of the shells on the beach. Sometimes my feet get cut-up by the shells.

So, what do I really need.......what works, what doesn't etc. Thanks!

I had good luck with the iPlay swim diapers -- my daughter pooped in them a number of times, but we never had any leakage. Her poops were none too firm at the time.

My boys wear swim shirts and trunks, and the little guy wears gerber plastic pants as a swim diaper-- he has liquid poop and they don't leak. You have to buy a couple sizes small, though-- he's an average sized 18 mos. and in the 0-3 mo. size!
The swim shirts are actually polyester/spandex (at least ours are-- from target). They aren't hot at all, they dry really fast (way faster than swim trunks) and they are SPF 50+. I think they are totally worth it.

Swim trunks with built in swim diaper and a swim shirt from Land's End. I LOVE the shirt. Water beads up on it and I love that it covers so much of his body (high neck, sleeves past his elbows).

Wet cotton in a windy environment is likely to leave Dc cold and doesn't actually hold much protection against UV on its own so it wouldn't be my first choice.

If we were out past 5pm or in a shady area I'd likely let Ds go naked at a lake/ocean or our backyard.

A swim diaper (we also like the iPlay ones). If we were going to be in the sun or an extended amout of time--which we try to avoid--I'd have him in a t-shirt as well. He refuses to wear a hat.

We go to the pool alot (YMCA) and DS just wears a swim diaper and trunks in the pool. He wears sandles in the locker room and shower. I wrap him up in a hooded towel as well.

I don't have any expeirience with pooping in swim diapers though since DS only poops at home.

Make sure your swimsuit has straps that will stay up with a toddler hanging from them. I have found I actually don't want nursing access to be too easy either b/c I prefer to shower before DS nurses since there is chlorine in the pool.

I agree with you, but they're required at the pool we go to, and at least they do a good job of containing the poop.

So what do you use? My daughter hasn't been swimming yet, so I don't really know what my options are. I was planning on just putting a diaper cover on her under her swimsuit. (I just bought a nice one on eBay, but I like those LLBean bodysuits better! Oh well, there's always next year.)

If you do a regular t-shirt, use sunscreen under it. T-shirts only have an spf of about 6.

I use a swim dipe for dd - the iplay brand. No clue how effective it is but necessary according to pool rules. If we were at the beach I'd forget a swim dipe. But dd has very regular bowel movements and I know when its coming

Also, don't forget to apply sunscreen 30mins to an hour before going out into the sun (or according to the manufacturers instructions).

Thanks everyone for you posts.

The LLbean stuff is cute, now if I could find it local....!
Are the nylon/spandex swim shirts a certain SPF even if it's not indicated on the tag or would they be the same as a T-shirt? Would that then be the same for nylon swim trucks? I'm really clueless as to the SPF factor for clothing.
So, if T-shirts are only 6 SPF does that apply to when they are wet or all the time? I'm asking because if so I probably need to put sunblock on DS under his shirt and shorts everyday. Granted we don't go out in the hot sun for long periods of time but still would be good to know for sure.
Thanks!

My son uses the swim shirts, swim trunks, and a swim dipe. The swim shirts are really worth the $$$. We have one my mom paid 20 bucks for and two more I bought at Target for less than 10. We use UV Natural sunscreen with a high spf. It really does help to apply the sunscreen before and to let it dry. I usually apply the lotion, change into my suit, then change him into his stuff, pack the beach bag and then go. We tried the t-shirt thing but they do get chilled with wet cotton clinging to them when they are not submerged. This is basically the only time my son isn't in all cotton because of his sensitive skin.

I didn't read the other responses, this is for DS, 12 months, very pale white, blond hair and blue eyes.

Cali baby stick sunscreen on face and ears.
Cali baby cream sunscreen on neck, arms, hands, legs, feet.
Hat, most the time.
LL bean long sleeve rash guard, 40 UPF
Swim diaper.
Swim "shorts" which are really clam digger lenght.
Some sort of terry swim cover up top if it gets cool.

I try to pick shady spots too, if possible.

Don't forget a cool drink too!
