What kind of care provider are you using?

I used an OB last time and I've seen her for this pregnancy 1 time so far. However, I'm going to VBAC so I would prefer a mw. I have my first mw appt on Thursday. I was just curious what kind of care provider that you guys are using.

I had a midwife for my first birth, but I'm going unassisted this time. Make sure to find a midwife that is not a hospital "med-wife". You will love having one.

I have a homebirth midwife. Last time we had a hospital midwife and ended up with more interventions than I wanted (but still natural labor and delivery). I'm hoping DH and my Mom will be supportive of unassisted next time around.

I am using a team of midwives in a hospital that are recommended by the Bradley Method group in this area (and have a good reputation for not being med-wives - cool term, by the way

I, too, am using a team of hospital midwives. We used them last time and were really happy with them. We had an intervention-free, natural hospital birth. The midwives really "protected" us from the hospital. But I was really happy to be in the hospital as well since I lost a lot of blood and needed some extra help after the birth. Just shop around as much as you can and ask lots of questions.
If all goes according to plan I'm planning on using a homebirth midwife. I birthed ds in a free standing birth center last time and I hated the drive home, which will hopefully be avoided this time. I just wanted to stay in that bed...
I will be doing co-care w/ a homebirth mw and a team of CNM's who deliver at a local hospital (haven't officially seen either yet).

We'll see where we end up birthing.
I have a lay midwife (the same one as Tori.) I like her, I used a CNM for my 3 year old's birth and she was great too.
Starlein, I am amazed at the similarities we have. I too birthed dd in an independent birth center with a CNM and her assistant nurse. Dh was there and my friend/hypnobirthing instructor. It was cozy and nice. I'd consider it again but the midwife is no longer practicing and the birth center is closed.

I have an appointment at my house in a few weeks with a home birth midwife. I have spoken to her on the phone and liked her. We'll see how the meeting goes.
That is what happened to me! The Birth Center closed, my midwife now works for the hospital, though I hear rumors that she is resigning April 1st.

I was prepared to UC/UP until I met my homebirth midwife, and really liked her.
I'm going the CNM route in a birthing center. I have my 2nd appointment with her next Monday, and am looking forward to seeing her again!
We actually moved from MD to SC (
) since I had ds so I can't even use my birth center again. My only gentle birth choice in this state is a homebirth. We wanted to move closer to Charlotte this summer but since homebirth is illegal in NC...we'll have to wait.

hey, congrats!!! i am so happy for you.

we are UCing. my first birth was a natural hospital birth. we got a 'med-wife' type cnm, but we had hints as to that long before the birth, we just didnt know any better.

so, i am my 'care-provider'!

I'm going to the same OB group I used for pg #1 for my check-ups and things only, I hope. The practice has 3 Drs. and 3 CNMs. I had a huge problem w/ one of the CNM's last time...she stripped my membranes at 37wks w/o asking and w/o reason. I ended up with hours and hours of un eventful menstrual cramp-like contractions and ended up needing every intervention in the book, almost, to get dd to come. This time, though I'm trepidatious about ending up with that CNM this time (it all depends on who's on call...) I don't have much of a choice. They are the only OB practice within half an hour of me (I'm very rural).
I'm thinking though, about talking to another CNM who works in L and D at the hospital about laboring me. She is an older Mennonite woman who is really wonderful and committed to natural childbirth. She takes off work and officiates at all the homebirths in my town in the Mennonite community. While a homebirth is what I'd like, Dh is dead set against it since we are so far from help in the event we do need it. I'm hoping this CNM is open to laboring me at the hospital as if I were one of her homebirth patients.... we shall see....wish me luck - now I've just got to get my OB to be okay with it at the hospital....

Hehe, your daughter was born on the same day mine was.

I think you, me, and littleteapot are the only UC'ers in this DDC, aren't we?

I'm using myself right now because we're planning on a UC but I have a friend who is a homebirth midwife who will be on call. I'd never, ever, ever see an OB and wouldn't trust any hospital midwives either because they still have to follow those ridiculous protocols with any deviations.
I'm UCing, just not UPing.
In this state, I'm seeing a hospital "medwife" CNM. She's really annoying both me and DH, and I'm glad our move is taking the decision away from us. In our destination state, I want to birth in a free standing birth center. It's staffed by OBs and CNMs, and has a mild reputation for being medicalized I think, but it should still be a better environment than a hospital, and a few of the midwives do have their fans.
Unassisted.
Had a completely hands-off midwife the first time, UP'd the second time, and will UP this time.
The tentative plan is to use a team of "community midwives." They're based and work shifts (only one a week, I think) at the hospital, but they also provide prenatal care for all low risk pregnant women and attend home births. (We're planning for the baby to be born at home.) I just get the midwife who's assigned to cover the pregnant women in my doctor's practice... hopefully we'll get along, because the thought of paying the equivalent of an extra $5000 for a private midwife freaks me out!
