For money reasons I need to pursue options that are in network and covered by insurance (Aetna). If I was going to take DD to someone who should it be? Allergist, GI, something else?

She is EBF, low weight gain, funky mucousy, vinegar smelly poop.

I have cut out gluten/dairy/soy/all nuts/all fish/caffeine/chocolate. She doesn't seem to get any worse with corn (I ate a bunch of 'safe' corn muffins yesterday), but I think the nightshades are causing the vinegar smell.

Anyone know what tests Aetna would cover? We have a high OON deductible so thats not an option unfortunatly.

I would try to find a GI DAN (defeat autism now) doctor. Not b/c you child is autistic but because the problems your child is having are similar to the digestive problems an autistic child has.

I would post in your tribal area and see if anyone knows anybody.. WHere do you live?

Also, is it a ppo or an hmo? I have Aetna ppo and they covered half the cost to go see a naturopath, although didn't cover testing. I assume Aetna is going to cover all the blood tests the GI ordered though.

I'd definitely go to a pediatric GI doc. A lot of them will have experience with GI problems caused by allergy issues as well as more typical GI issues. Allergists won't have anything to say unless you get a positive IgE test -- and even then, there's really nothing to DO about it (except give you an Epi). A GI doc will probably be able to tell you if he/she thinks you need to see an allergist, but you'll still want to see them for help with nutrition and fixing any problems a reaction has been causing.

We had good luck when we saw our first pediatric gastroenterologist, and our second (appointment in 2 weeks!) comes highly recommended from our pediatrician.

I have a PPO. We're in cenral NJ. I posted to the tribal area. The closest doc on the DAN site is 90 min. away and DD hates the car so we'll probably try the local pedi GI first.
