I have a question for those of you who use them. My dh wants to get a pacifier that he can use for dd when he's holding her and she wants to suck.

Edited to add: I need one that won't mess with the breastfeeding.

(P.S.- I don't like them myself and already know he could use a finger..., but it's not woth fighting over.)

IMO, this is one thing that IS worth fighting over. You are the one breastfeeding your daughter. If a pacifier were to interfere with your dd's latch, or anything, you would be affected by this more than your dh.

We gave Jasper a NUK paci when he was five months old, he loved it for almost two months, now hates it.

Problems caused by aware paci using mamas are geneerally noticed and corrected quickly by ditching the paci. I say until there is a problem this one isn't worth fighting over. If your dh is going to be the one watching her is for the best that they have somehting to meet that need. the finger thing is fine for a little while ut gets old really fast.

All three of my children have used them at some time and have never had a problem.

The brands we liked best were:

Gerber Flex new traditions something something. These are our hands down favorite.
Soothers are great for newborns but hard to find.
Gerber makes a cheap one that is sort of light bulb shaped and has a disk shaped face plate the curves out from the face. My first dd loved these.

The absolute worst for nursing problems are the NUK ones because they force the baby to press thier tounge up to the roof of thier mouth which creates a lot of latch problems. It was so bad at one of the hospitals here that the LCs demanded that they not be used by the hospital any more or given to new. They fought and won and now soothers are the ones they use.

We use a Nuk (yes, I know, but it was the only one sold where I live). But I've been searching and searching for one called the Avent Natural Newborn Comfort pacifier. It has a wide base to encourage an open mouth and proper latch, but I can't find it ANYWHERE!
I've heard nothing but great things about that one, in the realm of pacis that is.

definitely silicone over latex because silicone doesn't have a taste. The rest is just up to what your baby will like.

As said earlier, if baby starts to latch differently, discontinue the use of the paci. I've used pacis with both of mine (gerber "light-bulb" ones with the first and Avents with the second), even though my first had horrible "nipple confusion" (although he'd never had an artificial nipple when the troubles started
: ). I wait until they're 2 weeks old and latch is established. Introduce it slowly and watch for problems. If there are any (there were with Atley), I discontinue use and try a little later (3-4 weeks with Atley).

HTH! Oh, and pacis aren't from the devil. You just have to use them carefully

My DD sort of likes the Gerber light bulb kind, too. I think they're called "Comfort" or something like that. Actually, she more likes to chew on it for fun more than to suck on it for hours. BUT, we tried MAM's, Playtex Safe & Sure, Avent plain kind, latex, silicone, etc. We tried 'em all - I have a bag full - I thought they would be easier to wean from a paci than a thumb. But, when it came right down to it I had very little to say about it... DD likes her THUMB the best! She wouldn't take any no matter how hard I tried to get her to use one! I finally gave up putting the things in her mouth to only have her spit them back out. She's had no nipple confusion at all, she just likes her thumb.

We started only letting dd suck on our finger, but that became VERY difficult while in the car and driving! When we tried to introduce the pacifier, she didn't want it, but one day.. she changed her mind.

Now she sucks on it only when she wants, then spits it out. Her preference is the Gerber NUK, and now she won't suck on any other brand. We did not have any problems with the pacifier interfering with bfing- thank goodness.

The only down side is the suction marks on her poor face when she really gets going. Too bad she doesn't like the other brands which prevent that. The girl knows what she likes!

Both of my dc have used paci's. With dd I didn't know any better. We had a lot of problem's with breastfeeding, but they weren't really caused by the paci. Long story short, I almost died when I had her. I passed out and didn't wake up for 10 hours, so she didn't nurse for that long. My mom and dh tried to get her to nurse, but they couldn't. Then she got jaundice and wouldn't wake up to eat. The nurses in the hospital made me give her a botlle after 5 minutes of nursing and never told me to pump until the day we went home when she was 8 days old!!!
Anyways, before the jaundice set in, she wanted to suck all the time. She was in the nursery (I couldn't even stand up by myself and I had group strep) I didn't know enough to fight to have her in my room. They brought her to me every 30 minutes to eat. She would suck once and go to sleep, so I gave her a paci. SHe used a mam. She was sleep depedant on it for a year. I wish I hadn't given it to her, because then I could have had her use me as a paci and probably made my milk come in before the 3 weeks it took.

After all that I was bound and determined that ds would not be a paci baby. But he had other ideas. He likes to suck to sleep as well. I can nurse him to sleep and spend hours with him falling off my nipple and if I move a tiny bit he wakes up, even now at 6 months. So I gave him a paci, the only one he likes is nuk. But it hasn't affected him at all. He still nurses beautifully and he sleeps better now. I'm just worried about breaking him from it.

this is what we got from our LC (we arehaving terrible latch problems, long story...)

Soothie, www.childmed.com 1-888-788-8443 the website & ph # are printed on the paci!

they are supposed to be best @ not interfering with the latch & what I like best is that it does not form to the face, the base has no curve to it. Also, the whole thing is nice & soft & can be used as a teether. Ds will take it now & then (sleepy car seat, etc), but smart boy that he is, prefers to suck on something that will give a little milk now & then, like dear old mom!
