I am not sure how to categorize exactly what sort of wool it is, but I do agree it feels softer and more substantial than many other wool covers out there. There are also different versions floating around depending on where fuzbaby was sourcing their wool from at the time.
As for the machine washing/ drying, the instructions say you can, but the drying could shrink it slightly.
Be careful of machine washing bombs with appliques on them.
I always gentle machine wash my sons' fuzbombs. I have a front loader. If I had a machine with an agitator, I might put it in a lingerie bag first, but I really think it would be ok anyway. I always hang to dry and they are still looking great.
