The birth center I called today (and plan to use during my delivery at the hospital) said I would need a surgical consult with the attending OB/GYN to make sure I'm a good candidate and that they would need my surgical report. What would make me NOT a good candidate?

My midwife team requested my surgical report too. If you had some strange type of incision on your uterus and not the low transverse, that makes VBAC a bit more risky. They may also be looking for the method of suturing since sometimes they do one layer of stitching and sometimes two (two is better). Things like that I assume. It would be good for you to look at the records yourself too so you know and can research anything that they bring up, or you can be assured that there's not much to worry about at all. I'd look into it myself too, just so you are as informed as you can be. Good luck!!

according to some CPs, the tides and the phases of the moon would rule you out. If they don't want to do it, they'll come up with just about anything to talk you out of it.

Sounds like you birth center is looking to make sure you have a low transverse incision and they may be checking on whether you have one or two layers of sutures. There is some debate as to whether single or double layer suturing matters, but on the whole it's more desirable by providers to see double layer suturing in the report. (My last OB said it doesn't make a difference.)

It just depends on who you're talking to. Sometimes health concerns for the mother make her less likely to have a successful VBAC. Whether that is high blood pressure, GD, or something else, sometimes they consider that too risky to go through with a VBAC. Also, some hospitals/doctors/birthing centers won't "allow" a woman to VBAC if the previous labor didn't go as they thought it should. They can get pretty annoying

With a surgical report they are usually looking at the type and location of the incision and type of suturing done. Any incision done on the upper part of the uterus would make you an "unsuitable" candidate for a VBAC. Also any L or T shaped incisions would also be something they would be wary of. But some doctors will be willing to do VBACs for low vertical incisions. Just depends. Most incisions are low transverse so you probably have nothing to worry about.
