using? What was the outcome? I'm new to this forum, but I just had to ask. I just keep thinking and thinking about chelation and how it is the new buzz word and then there is the casien/gluten free camp, and then I wonder about what things naturally occuring in nature could act as chelators, and natural detoxes, and foods to restore the gut. I don't think I wanna say restore the gut, but you kwim, right? So then, after I got all in my own head batting these ideas around, I figured if I just asked, I bet you mamas have already btdt and could probably move me along up to speed. And if anyone knows what I can do with coconut milk and kefur, please, please, lay it on me! TIA!

ETA: Duh, I meant for the PDD kids, namely like autism with leaky gut.......

I work exclusivly with children and parents of children with autism and have a semi-crunchy mama that swears by a few things (I've seen the difference as his teacher):

CellFood: http://www.deutrel.com/cellfood.htm - a mineral suppliment and major detoxifier

Spectra Greens: http://www.davincilabs.com/vitamins_supplements/spectra-greens.php - a natural superfood/vitamin suppliment out of Vermont

A combo of these foods gives you most of what your body needs!

I also know her son loves to eat these: RoadsEnd you have to look at each product (many are GF/CF)

My family and I eat all of these too. Wish I could help more, but you can always PM me with questions regarding autism & PDD's (I have piles of information)!

Chelation has risks (some serious, so research it thoroughly), but there are natural chelators. Check here: http://www.tacanow.com/chelation.htm

We do GFCF because my son suffers if we don't, but it's not really a gut-healing diet. For that, you might check out the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (if it weren't for many, many other food issues, this is the one I would do). Check out www.pecanbread.com for more information (last time I checked, they even had an autism section).

We have used homeopathy with my daughter with marvelous results. Using a homeopath who knows all of the intricacies of selecting the right remedy is important, though.

We also tried megavitamin therapy and DMG with mixed results -- some things got better and some things got worse (most likely because they weren't being "masked" anymore, but I didn't know that then). Food and sensitivity issues have gotten in the way of trying it again.

I've known other people in my support groups who have tried other therapies (cranio-sacral, hippotherapy, auditory integration, music therapy, herbs, etc). Overall, everyone has been pleased with the alternative therapy they tried. For me, the ones I selected were the ones that simply felt right for a particular child when I was doing research. There are many others that sounded good, but they didn't make me feel strongly about their potential for a particular child.

Hope you get more responses since I'm always interested in people's experiences, too.

Thank you both so much! That is exactly the type of info I'm trying to find. I know it is so hard to rattle off options without knowing the child specifically. We actually did all the CFGF a good year to two years ago and while initially, the CF was necessary, I don't think he ever had a problem with the wheat proteins. We were able to successfully reintroduce dairy/lactose too. I do know that he is sensitive to sugars so we try to keep those at a minimum b/c we can't seem to stick to total sugar elimination.

What do you guys think about probiotics for the gut?

I'm definitely gonna further investigate natural detox.

Thanks so much again!!

I think they're a wonderful idea. I try to introduce them periodically, but no luck so far. I've only heard 2 cautions about them. One is that you need to get the right kind/right brand, etc or they won't be effective -- just a waste of money. The other is the debate that natural fermented foods (kefir, yogurt, etc) are superior to store-bought products. This isn't an area where I have a lot of knowledge, but I bet you could turn up some good information in the Nutrition threads.

Good luck!

we are currently preparing for chelation (I know my two older sons are victims of mercury poisoning (from vaccines)). I will be sure to post about how it works for us. We will be using TD-DMPS when we get started. At this point we are gluten free and drastically reduced dairy (but have not yet eliminated it, the doc didn't seem to think he had a big problem tolerating it). We are also on the following suppliments:

Proibotics to help with gut issues
Fish oil
Zinc - we have seen some good improvements with this, reduced stimming (in my middle guy) slightly less anger problems (in my oldest)
Mag Cal
Intestinal Repair Complex

and we tried B6 but I think the kids have a phenol sensitivity so I we have stopped taking that one until I talk to the doc again. (Middle DS started being REALLY clumsy after taking it, and oldest DS was VERY tempermental). So I think its safe to say they aren't gaining anything from that one.

We will also be starting B12 shots with the chelation.

so we are in pretty deep here. Praying for recovery

My 8 year old son has been chelating with td-dmps for the last 6 months and wow, it has made the biggest difference. We were chelating with dmsa and ala for several months before but only saw minor gains. Since we started to use td-dmps, my son potty trained himself over night, is now pretend playing with other kids at school, hasn't had a tantrum since Decemeber (and it used to be daily) and almost all his sensory issues are gone. In addition to the transdermal dmps, we are also using the following supplements and diet:

gluten free, very low sugar, and preservative free
lipoceutical glutathione
multi vitamin
multi mineral caps
calcium
magnisum malate
zinc
kid greenz
b-12
folinic acid
dmg
carlson fish oil
acidophilus
taurine

This is another thread I need to print out! Thank you all so very much for sharing with me. This is all so very helpful. I will definitely keep everyone posted on what we do.

I have to say I would really look into Classical Homeopathy. I have treated a lot of animals with vaccine effects (including my own dog but luckily not my child) and if I had to deal with vaccine effects in my child I would definitely go that route in conjunction with the other suggestions in this thread as I think it can make a huge difference. I would find a good homeopath though (ask for referrals and references and experience in treating your particular issues) as that makes a difference to how much it would help. Here is a good place to start:

http://www.homeopathic.org/

PS Your family is beautiful and sorry you learned the hard way about vaccinations, but sounds like you are on the right track here.

I am doing a lot of the same things that mommymarliah is doing with her kids. We have seen a big difference with the B12 shots. My dh usually gives ds the shots, and we started every three days, by the third day, I always new, because ds would be having a lot of hyper activity. We are now trying the shots everyday. We laid off the td-dmps, because he seemed to be reacting badly behaviorally with that, so we'll start again after we do a week or 2 of b12 every other day. We are also doing P-5-P which is B6, but I'm not sure how is differs from regular B6 (if anyone knows, please pm me), zinc, nordic naturals artic cod liver oil, tyrosine, folinic acid, and a good multivitiamin (rainbowlight). We did an elimination diet, and sugar and additives seemed to cause problems. I would like to ask how you know if your child has problems with their gut? Our doctor also thinks that ds's symtoms are brought out by vaccination mercury build up! If I only knew then what I know now.
