I have a couple wool covers that I have washed with Woolite one time now. I understand that they will need "lanolized" periodically, and on lots of WAHM sites I see various kinds of "wool wash" with lanolin. Can someone clarify for me what I really need to do? I guess the Woolite cleans but doesn't protect the waterproofing aspect? Is a wool wash containing lanolin enough or is there an extra step? I just sent off for this free sample of Eucalan that says it contains lanolin. Will that work well?

And now that I think of it...somewhere I have samples of pure lanolin for putting on sore nipples...can I use that somehow on the covers?

TIA!

if you washed them with wool lite you need to heavily lanolize them. Wool lite is not recommended for wool covers because it completely strips them of their natural oils i believe

For wool covers you need to wash them with a wool soap (eucalan or there are many wahm alternatives) and you will also need to lanolize them every so often. The plus of using a wool soap with lanolin in it is that it gives your cover a boost and makes lanolizing needed less often, if that makes sense? you will probably still have to do it, but maybe only like once a month. I only have a couple of wool covers... I wash them all once a week and lanolize them every 3 weeks or so
And yes you can use pure lanolin.... I believe there is a thread up in the resources forum with how to wash/lanolize wool... I will check and edit if i find it!

Wool covers need to be lanolized around once a month with either pure lanolin melted in water or with a wool buddy. Then every time you wash in between lanolizing you should use a wool wash containing lanolin to help keep them waterproof...so you don't have to lanolize all the time.

Doh!
Somehow I knew it wasn't a good idea...but one had poop on it and the other one DS threw into the toilet before I could stop him...I just felt like I had to get them washed right away.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

yeah... when we got poop on a cover (luckily its been rare for us
) we do a rinse in cold water immediately.. that usually takes out most of it... then wash it when we can. If you dont have any actual wool wash on hand you can use baby shampoo... then lanolize with your lanolin ! HTH!
