We planted some pumpkins, watermellons, cantelopes, bell peppers last year, but the wild life (squirrels, racoon...) ate it all up.
We even put up a chickenwire fence around the planting. Anyways, we just emptied up dd's sandbox (we made her another one), so I thought I can use the frame (5'x5') to create a raised bed. My question is, what should I plant? I know its a little late in the season, but dd#2 (born in March) took most of our time this past couple of months. I would love to plant something edible, but definitely stuff that animals do not like.
Otherwise, I guess we can always plant cut flowers. Please help! DH thinks I'm just wasting my time again.

We are fighting the wild life here as well. We lined the bottom of the beds with a fine chicken wire (small holes) and covered the plants with chicken wire. Gophers got in the bed and trenched above the lining and below the covering. We got some live traps (haven't caught a thing) and some snap traps (caught the main offending gopher, one toad
, and a rat). We also put up a deer fence topped with hot wire. We will be lining the bottom of the deer fence with chicken wire to deter squirrels from moving in. I hope we have a late summer garden with all of this. BTW, there is nothing I know of that these animals won't eat.
