My sister is getting married next week. She's having a big gala affair and the wedding website says the theme is "Western - interpret how you wish." When they first published the site it said "Old West - interpret how you wish" but then changed it after a few weeks.

In light of the update, I was just going to go casual with a little bit of Western thrown in. The boys were going to wear khakis and western button-down shirts. Hubby would probably wear khakis and a polo or button-down shirt. I was going to wear a dressy sundress with a shawl or shrug. We're a pretty laid-back family and the wedding is outdoors with a reception at a huge well-known BBQ place.

But then today a few friends and family members who are involved in the wedding had a discussion on Facebook about their extensive preparations for dressing the part of the "Old West" theme.

Now I'm wondering if I should go more modern western, or old west, or just stick with what I already planned. I'm in Texas, so modern western wear is easy to find. Old West themed stuff is more difficult, especially with only a week to go, but still doable.

And yes I could ask my sister, but she would say - "Oh just wear whatever, I know you all will look great and I'm so happy you're coming!" Because she's great like that.

If I were "going western",

I would wear either dark blue jeans with long sleved button down shirt (that looked westernish) with a belt and boots, or

I would wear a "square dance skirt" (knee length with lots of crinolines under it to "poof" it out) with button down shirt and boots.

i would likely wear my LBD and a pair of cowboy boots that i would probably find at a second hand store, and the more garish the better because that's just fun.

i saw a pair at a second hand store here that were bright sky blue with red, purple, yellow, orange, and hot pink stitching on it (floral design). they were something special. they cost $7.

i would wear that with my little black dress.

Zoebird those boots sound fab! How much to ship 'em to the states?

My other sister said she will probably wear a very dressy LBD type dress with boots. She's dressing her girls in froufrou dresses and boots. Girls are easy to cheese up. Boys, not so much lol!

Hm... now to find boots.

Thinking... the boys might look cute in slacks w/ suspenders, like little Old West ragamuffins all dressed up. Wonder if I could find jackets and boleros for them too? What to do about hubby? hm...

What a fun theme!

Kids are easy - just plain black pants with little black cowboy boots, a white shirt (or even checked, since it's not a black tie wedding) and vest. And maybe a western style hat. Since it's fairly informal I'd even let them pin a sheriff's badge onto their vest. Your DH could wear something similar (minus the badge ).

There's a pic of a little boy here, that's the image I had in my head:
http://www.myexpression.com/articles...ldWildWest.cfm

Girls are much harder, I just googled and there aren't many ideas which are suitable for a wedding. The only thing I can think of is a broomstick style (or tiered) skirt with cowboy boots, like the picture in the top row to the far right:

http://wedding-pictures.onewed.com/e...irts-suede.JPG

Here are some of the google images I found:

http://www.inspirationcostumehire.co..._Wild_West.jpg

http://www.costumefactory.com.au/cat...stumes_181.jpg

http://www.racheshop.de/product_imag...owgirl_big.jpg
(like I said, not really suitable for a wedding)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jRyGmvIBK_...dbc5c932ee.jpg

Good luck deciding! Please let us know what you choose!

yeah, i forgot to mention the ever-amazing denim jacket.

seriously, you can put a denim jacket over anything. it would work for the kids too.

straw cowboy hats should be easy to come by in spring/summer.

Translation, they want "old west" and someone pitched a hissy fit about "you can't make the guests wear costumes!!!"

Go with your original sundress idea. It's cute, weather-appropriate, and fits well with how they actually wanted their wedding to be.

LOVE all the ideas! Thank you guys!

It's a bit hot for a denim jacket but I can definitely do denim in other ways. The straw hats would be cute, and I love the vest idea for the boys.

I'm actually about halfway through making a black denim pencil skirt for myself, wondering if I should just wear that with a dressy shirt and boots. Might be cute, if I can get it finished.

I think I'm going to hit a few thrift stores tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

i think the black denim skirt with a dressy shirt and flashy cowgirl boots would be great.

and seriously, when i lived in PA and AR i would wear a denim jacket all summer--or at least carry one around. it's amazing how much AC people use, and also, keeping my skin covered keeps me cooler. but hey, i can't argue if it's too hot for you.

My thoughts, exactly.
