silvers sock class calls for 5s.. is that right? would use use a smaller needle for a denser fabric? Some of the dk/sport socks on ravelry use 3s... I would just swatch, but I have to go buy needles before I do that and need a place to start

I use 2's or 3's with DK yarn... I did Silver's Sock Class with worsted on 5's for my first socks.

you did a pair of WW on 5s? I did my ww pair on 8s.. because that was what I had <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
maybe I'll just get both sizes and try it out.. I think I might have a set of size 3 dpns somewhere around here.. Spending $8 for a set of needles isn't too bad if I remind myself they'll last the rest of my life..

yeah--I'm loose <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">! Actually, there is such a great variation of worsted weight--my yarn was probably more "light" worsted.<br><br>
Aren't socks fun, though? I'm about to start my first pair with actual sock yarn...soon as I finish about a million other things already OTN <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">.

Most of the dk patterns I've seen ask for 3.75mm. In the end, though, the crucial thing is that you need to like your gauge...

I've done a couple pairs using ArtYarns (not sure of the weight) Superwash stuff and I did 3's. I wish i had thought to do them on 5's because it was almost claustrophobc (despite fitting perfectly). The material it made was too thick. Not sure if that helps you any.

I think you guys are right and they'd be better on 3s. I got some 5s and swatched and it seemed kind of loose for a sock. I'll try doing another pair of WW on the 5s - the ones on 8s are very stretchy. I'm glad to be getting needles for Christmas!
