The babies are 11 weeks old and lately they have taken to napping more during the day and then staying up late at night. Tonight we put them down at 8:00 pm and at 8:40 they were both awake and hungry. They nursed off and on and we eventually got them down at 11:00 pm.

I think they are gearing up for a growth spurt with all the extra nursing, but I want to start getting them to a bedtime routine. Am I foolish for thinking that I can start a bedtime routine at 11 weeks? I end up staying up late to get stuff done because I spend so much time nursing, I'm ready for a break.

Sorry that this has been rambling, I'm tired and I should be heading off to bed.

I normally put my 7wk old down around 9:30 - but that's because we usually go to bed then too. He really needs a quiet dark place to fall asleep and stay asleep so when we are up late he usually is too (we live in a very wide open apt - similar to a loft..so he knows when we are still up!).

No special schedules here. He's often asleep from 7-10 in arms. He wakes up to nurse sometime between 10 and midnight, which we do in bed and after which we turn out the lights.

He sleeps when he's tired. Aside from my husband going to work, that's what we do too. When he's wide awake and we're going to bed, we do put him in a sleep sack and set him in between us to kick his feet and wave his arms and be funny. We assume that at some point he gets bored and falls asleep but who knows, because sometimes we wake up and he's still there kicking and wiggling and laughing
He has been nursing 'himself' in my sleep since the first week, which is just about my favourite thing he does because I'm usually pretty well rested. We do have a pattern during the week because my husband works nights so we settle in at about 5-7 am. The only one in our house with a schedule is the dog because she really prefers predictability and sighs and pouts when we do something late.

Gidget goes to sleep at 7:30. I give her a bath at 7:00, nurse her and put her down by 7:30. This is her own internal clock. I was just letting her be until she fell asleep on her own. At about 7:30, she'd start to fuss, by 8:00 she'd be wailing. She'd wail for about 2 hours, then finally fall to sleep. She wouldn't take the breast or a binky...she'd jsut scream. I finally figured out that she was overtired. I started to put her to sleep at 7:30, and night time has been MUCH nicer around here. She won't let me cuddle her or do anything like that to get her to sleep either. If I do anything to soothe her to sleep, she stays awake and gets real pissed! I have to put her down in bed and leave.

This is Audrey too, except it's 7, 11, 4, and up at 7. She's fallen into this routine all on her own, and it tends to vary by only a half hour either way most of the time. She's a good sleeper though and will sleep anywhere with anything going on really.

You can start a routine as soon as you wish. Have you read Babywise at all?
I had a really hard time w/ getting Naomi to sleep at first, then at about 4 weeks she was trying to roll over... so I rolled her over and she has slept wonderful on her tummy. I know it's not recommended, but the endless crying stopped and now she fusses, I put her in bed and she quietly goes to sleep. I still had her sleep on her back at night- would roll her back over after she went to sleep, but now she is so strong- that I don't worry about it.
Aside from that- now at 12 weeks, do her last feeding around 8pm, her middle of the night feeding was around 4am, but she has been sleeping almost 12 hours now for the last week. yippee!

I think Babywise is like any other book-- it can be a tool, not "the law", and in the hospital they put babies in the NICU on routine feedings.
For me, I couldn't live w/o a routine- it's how I stay sane and know I can accomplish something during the day. I'm not strict and my babies are very content and I've never made them cry through the night. But w/ having a routine they have always gone to bed/gotten up very easily and happily. Everyone has a different parenting style- I wouldn't consider different "horrible".

I never said different was horrible. And I never insinuated that having a routine was horrible.
But I will say I find CIO horrible. And I find a book that advocates CIO as a method of instoring routine in infants qualifies as horrible as well.
I am anti-CIO and this is why I avoid mainstream boards and gravitate towards boards like MDC that advocate an AP style of parenting.

Good to see you back (I'd noticed you weren't posting much for a long time)

I'm with you on that- Johnny sleeps great, but still I feel tired and worn out
...then I feel bad complaining because I know he sleeps so well!

Would this be a good night or a bad night for you and baby?

8-9:15 Nurse to almost sleep, still a bit fussy
9:15 Put in swing (only way he'll fall asleep on fussy nights), asleep within minutes
12:30 Wake to nurse, come to bed with me
2:50 Wake to nurse, fall right back asleep while nursing
5:30 Wake to nurse/baby ready to be awake
5:30-6:30 In and out of sleep with some light kicking and grunting (baby, not me
)
6:30 Mom finally gives in and gets up

'Cause this was one of our best nights and I have a feeling many of you would consider this a rough night!!

Thanks (really just curious, I am not at all upset with our nighttimes or worried if they are normal)
