What to do about rabbits eating my garden?

1742 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  MeganW
This is my flower garden. The foliage has just started really growing in and they're showing up to chow down. Is there anything I can do to repel them? I was thinking I could maybe put something else for them to eat down in another location but I'm afraid of attracting more of them.

Thanks for any advice.

I have heard people say to brush your dog or cat and put the hair around the garden. If you don't keep the bunnies away, they will chomp all the blooms off your flowers. You could get drastic and use a fence they can't get through. Good luck, they are quite persistant when they find a tasty garden. LOL

One more check in the "pro" column on my "Should we get a dog?" list.

I was just reading that garlic and lavender repel them. I wonder if I could make up some sort of concentrate and mist my plants. But I really don't want Stargazers that smell like garlic.

We had such a horrible rabbit munching problem we were driven to using liquid fence - all natural (as far as I have found out) mostly garlic - stinks like all get out, and is kinda pricy. I tried to make my own with water, an egg, garlic, and chilipowder through cheesecloth and had a heck of a time with the sprayer and mixed results with strength. The liquid fence does work on rabbits and deer too. hth
I've heard other people say planting marigolds will keep rabbits away. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

I think that marigolds will only work if:
1) There are lots of them
2) They are extremely close to the plants you're trying to protect
AND
3) There are other appetizing plants near by.

Otherwise,

Seriously, I'd have my dh and boys pee all around the garden area. The nitrogen in the urine is actually fertilizing and the scent should scare of little chompers. A folk remedy fertilizer uses 1 part urine to 10 parts water for an all-purpose fertilizer they called 'Urine Control' (you're in control).

You can also buy bitter apple spray that is nontoxic but tastes nasty. I used that on cords while my rabbits were free-hopping around my house. They're now out only when supervised, but that's for a number of reasons. It worked so-so. maybe I didn't use enough.
said I should look at it as pest control, we're having it for dinner.

Where can I get liquid fence?

How do you 'accidentally' shoot a rabbit? LOL DH would love to shoot mine, but they're pets. So, was he tasty?
yeah, was he tasty?

I have a big ol bird that has been kicking up seedling, eating the tiny plants, basically wreaking havoc!Uggh, so frustrating.

The Rabbit was great we stewed him. Well he thought he was shooting at a cat that's been in our trash.
