I have gained a fair amount of weight since being put on a med in June. All other meds for this made me very sick, as most are sulfa drugs and I am allergic. Last week the dose was cut by 2/3 and I have gained more weigh even quicker.
: I am miserable. I have one pair of shorts that fit, no pants that fit and I don't know what to do. The freaking doc's office says that it has nothing to do with the meds, but that's not true. I don't eat any differently and HELLO!? since when do any kind of steroid meds NOT make you gain weight? I have just left a message with the doc's office basically telling them that they are wrong and something has to be done now.
: What the heck am I supposed to do?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted to give you a big
.

I gained quite a bit of weight during my infertility treatments and I know how hard it can be to get off.

I hope you find your answers soon.

Take care.

yes, steroid meds do make you gain weight. even if you eat the same you still put on some weight. i have been on and off of them quite a few times so believe me i know how you feel. a friend had to be on them for an extended period of time and went from 105 up to 130
and she didnt eat any different. it took her months of walking and other exercise to get it back off. i hope that you get some answers soon

Thanks. The nurse called and got all snotty with me and tried to brush me off. I was persistant about what the side effects are and asked her if she was somehow saying that they didn't apply to me.
She got all flustered and put me through to the doc. He is trying to tell me that it's water weight.
I guess I should get my thyroid checked too.
We'll see. Hopefully I won't wake up someday and not be able to leave the house 'cause I have no clothes that will fit.

I'm there with you mama, and I now have to get serious about doing something about since I will be on prednisone for life.
I went on pred when we started trying to have a baby, threw 3 yrs and 4 losses and one live baby I have gained 85 lbs. I'm often on quite high doses for arthritis and addison's flare ups. It's f*cking hell.
Yes you will gain without any change in your eating habits, on top of that, they make you depressed, which tends to cut your activity level.
I'm rejoining weight watchers this week and hoping to just at least get it under control (although after this recent blood clot and addison's crisis I am still on 35 mg of pred a day, so I'm not sure if loosing at this dose is even possible)
Maybe we can support each other through some of this??

I am so glad that you are okay after all that hell you just went through. A friend of mine uses Weight Watchers as well. She swears by it. I am guessing that if you are rejoining, that means it works for you as well? I have thought about it. I think the start up cost is what makes me hesitate to do that, but I guess maybe I should look at my friend's stuff and see what I think then.

The weirdest thing is that for the last three years I was on Predinsone fairly regularly, high doeses too. Like 50 and 40 mg and I didn't gain any weight from it. Now I am on Entocort, initially 27mg a day and now 9mg a day. It's supposed to only be released in my intestine. And all the weight is in my hips and thighs now. Not much anywhere else. Odd hey? Supposedly you aren't supposed to have the same side effects as prednisone, but it ain't looking like that is true.

Shannon, have you lost weight ever while on any steroids? I have on prednisone, but not intentionally.

I managed to loose 20 lbs while on pred (on purpose) while my dose was stabilized for 6 mos. (on WW)
For me, I can do it if my dose is stable, but with the Addisons it keeps being adjusted if I'm stressed and that's where I hit a wall.
Did the pred work for your condition? Is it worth going back on it? Does the Entocort have the same issues with bone loss as pred does?

The prednisone didn't work as well as this stuff does. It seems odd though. They say Entocort doesn't have the same side effects, so I am not positive about the bone loss thing. When I take prednisone, my right shoulder hurts after about two weeks. It feels like if I keep moving it in the same direction (when I feel the shooting pain) that it'll just snap right off or something. I imagine that's not a good thing.
I haven't really noticed the same things with the Entocort though.

The goal is to drop down to two pills a day in six months and so on I guess. I really hope that if I don't have to up the dose at all, that I can lose weight too. That's great that you were able to lose 20 pounds though!
The only time I have ever lost that much weight was in huge flare up of the colitis.
It's nice to be thin, but who sees it when you're sitting on the toilet all day?

Auto-immune conditions are so nasty, IMO. It's a life long vicious cycle. I think that the reason that there's seems to be no natural cure is because they stem from an unnatural cause. I'd like to see a study on how many people who have them have been vaccinated for anything and how many have not. Somehow, I don't think that will ever be done, atleast not if they want to keep pushing drugs. Maybe we could try and do an informal poll here?

I'm in the same boat, but with a different medication. I gained somewhere between 12 and 16 lbs in ONE month. (12 lbs on my scale, 16 lbs on dr's scale). Sucks when you know you can't stop the medicine but you feel so crappy from gaining weight from the medicine.
