My dog (1 yr old border collie/black lab) had "the runs" last night and a bit this morning. Any idea how long I should wait before feeding her and what would be the best food to start with (rice, etc)?

canned pumpkin. (not pie filling) I normally go ahead and give that pretty early on, like right now as long as she is not throwing up at all.

What you feed next might depend on how many days this continues and what she normally eats.

I'm one who basically ignores it unless the dog actually acts sick. I feed as usual if the dog is acting normal and happy, and it resolves just about as quickly. If the diarrhea is frequent (so there's an increase in urgency as well as bad "texture"), I'll add pumpkin and make sure the dog is staying hydrated. If I notice any lethargy, I fast one or two meals, push liquids (I'll syringe with a turkey baster things like pedialyte or very dilute chicken broth), and then feed cooked rice or rice and hamburger. If I can't stay on top of the liquids because the dog has begun vomiting or the dog is refusing to eat or drink anything for more than a few hours and is really acting punk, we go to the vet.

Well, my doggie seems to be doing fine. Thanks for the advise everyone. I had the pumpkin out of the freezer, checked the yogurt's expiration date and got out the rice- all just in case.
Haven't had to give her anything. She hasn't had any other symptoms and the runs did not return.
