What to do with lots of raw sunflower seeds?

587 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  abandbunk
A friend is moving and gave us two very large produce bags filled with raw sunflower seeds. They are hulled or shelled or whatever you call it, pretty much ready to use. I know about roasting, but what temp should i do it at/how long/what seasonings? Anything else that these are ideal for?

TIA!

I got mine from Cynthia Lair's Feeding the Whole Family.
I use them as a base for homemade veggie burgers!
I love them!
- lately I enjoy them just simple (raw - it's such a pity to roast them!) + a bit of sea salt
- a "milk shake" I lika a lot: soaked sunflowers, soaked raisins (roughly equal amounts, but you can experiment) - blended well with some water and then blended a bit more with some banana.
- they are part of many other raw recipes - if you're interested I can elaborate
- you can grind them a bit (coffee grinder if you don't have a blender) and sprinkle them on salads - much better than oil! Some people use them whole on salads, but I find that they easily slip unchewed and it's a waste.

How about putting them in granola or granola bars?
I use them in raw pates and burgers. I also do seed milks and make little treats with raw almond butter, tahini, raw honey, coconut and sunflower seeds. I would never roast them.

I make salad seeds they are sooo yummy, and very easy! IT's basically just sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and tamari (mix them all together in a bowl)! and you bake them on a cookie sheet stirring a couple of times, and then throw them on your salad, they are soo good. I'll look up the proportions....

ok, 1/2 c. sunflower seeds, 1/3 c. untoasted sesame seeds, and 1 to 1 1/2 tsp tamari (or soy) oven is 325, grease your cookie sheet (or just use parchment paper) bake for 10 min. then stir them, bake for another 10 min or so stirring again, bake them until they are lightly browned and not dry, but don't ovrbake them, they go from perfect to burnt really quickly imo. YOu can make enuf to use for up to 2 wks at a time, they will last at room temp. in a airtight container, you can also use these on veggies. But my favorite is salad.
