For Ds's second birthday we had a party at the little gym. We had his first b-day there as well. We invited his cousins, and my friends two kids. For his second B-day Dh and I gave him a trike because Dh got a bicycle for his B-day and now they can ride together. This year however we are giving him a party at home. Dh doesn't want to spend a bunch of money on the little gym again. So we are having a truck party. The kids will play outside, and we will barbeque. I am also getting these little plastic flower pots that the kids can color, and some dirt and beans so they can all plant bean stalks. I always make Ds's cake myself, his first was a train, last year I made three small cakes, Elmo, Cookie Monster and Telly. This year I am making cupcakes with little trucks on top. I am asking that the guests not bring him a bunch of toys. I know it sounds a little weird, but since we only invite family we get to fill them in on what Ds wants. This year we are requesting money to put towards a gymnastics class for Ds. He really wants one, and they are a little out of our price range.

For a two year old you want to think about the same things as with a one year old. You want to work around her sleeping scheduel, and not plan anything too big. Maybe some family and close friends at the park or somewhere else she really likes. I wouldn't go crazy and have a clown or magician or anything because it would probably just scare her. A word of caution though, if you have the party at your house be ready to spend a lot of time cleaning up. I know alot of moms just opt for Chuckie Cheese or something similar. Don't feel bad for not wanting to host a party at your house though, I do have to say that even though it was expensive, the little gym parties were a blast for the kids and the adults, and all I had to do was provide the cake and party favors.

my friend's daughter is turning two next week and they are having a party at a local park for about two hours (10-12). That way everyone elses kids can play and have fun and no REAL big mess to clean up. I think they were just going to provide snacks. I know they are getting her a trycicle.

My dd turns two in august. I haven't decided what kind of party to have yet. DD is very shy and tends to cling to me when other kids are around, so I will probably just have a small family gathering (w/grandparents and SIL and her fiance). WE will either get her a trycicle or a wooden kitchen w/the wooden veggies etc.

I think the big question as far as the party is concerned is how does your child do around other kids. If she seems to really enjoy their company and pays attention to them then go ahead and invite all her little friends. It will be a lot of work for you if it's at home, but if you do it at a park there's virtually no work besides getting food together. Personally, I don't think it's really worth it to have a big blow out for a two year old who probably won't even remember it the next day.

plus if it's just family, you can spend a little more money and get the cutesy themed plates/cake/hat etc. and involve your toddler in the process of getting ready. Make it more about your kid than all the other kids you will be planning for.

For our dd's 2nd birthday we got her an art easel at IKEA (under $20) and some paints, paint brushes and chalk (there's a chalkboard on the other side of the easel). She LOVES
it and wants to paint ALL the time. We also got her a sand and water table that she loves. This was a bit more pricey, but worth it. She loves playing in it and it stacks onto itself nicely so there's no cover to buy. No help on the party front. We just had a family bbq.

We got dd an IKEA train set for her birthday...cost $20. She loves it. (BTW, Fleurette, my dd has that easel, too. It's great!)

We had family over for cake and gifts. We also invited 4 other toddler friends. We put a kid's picnic table in the middle of the room with playdoh, sippy cups, and snacks. The kids just sat and grazed and played with the playdoh, then sat and had cake. It was totally low-key, but a nice party.
