Hey I hope y'all don't mind me crashing your forum.

We're grilling steaks for a family get together tomorrow. My STB-SIL is newly veg and is coming. She eats dairy and maybe eggs. We've planned the menu so we don't have to have the oven or stove on while people are here because they really heat up the house. I'm trying to think of main dish type things we could grill for SIL. The rest of our menu is, baked beans, pasta salad, veggies and dip, 5 bean salsa, bread, tossed salad, strawberry shortcake.

So what do y'all toss on the grill?

When I was a vegetarian, I'd grill meat analogs (veggie burgers/hot dogs and the like), portabella mushrooms, or veggie kabobs.

Zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, whole tomatoes and onions cut in half, then put on warm pitas and tsaziki sauce and they can eat it as a wrap. YUM!

Yeah. most stores have tofu dogs, veggie burgers and stuff like that. Veggie Kabobs are great, and grilled eggplant is good too.

I hate to say this, but I'm a vegetarian, and I'd have a lot of trouble eating something grilled right next to a steak.
I'd fill up on sides-- esp that strawberry shortcake! How kind of you to think of your new SIL!

Hmm what about if the OP put the veggies in aluminum foil with butter and wrapped up the veggies and put that on the grill so no part of the veggies is touching old grilled steak?

Not totally a main dish, but so so so good I could eat it as one! Grilled veggies on the grill- dice up potato, carrot, sweet potato and LOTS of garlic. Use whole cloves of garlic, cut in half or fourths. Lay out a sheet of foil and coat the bottom in butter/margarine. Lay the veggies on, and put another dollop of butter on them. Wrap them up, and put them on the grill.
I think it takes them 20-40 minutes, depending on how hot your grill is and how full the packet is. You want them browned and crispy on some of the edges.
It is omg to die for!

Stuffed mushrooms. Get some nice big flat mushrooms and remove the stalks. Chop the stalks up fine along with a some onions and herbs. Fry in a little oil/butter till soft and add a bit of cream cheese to bind it together. Grill the mushrooms gills down then turn over and fill with the stuffing. Grill until the mushrooms are soft and the cheese bubbly.

Slices of halumi cheese also grill well.

I would either grill the veggies in a corner of the grill (or ahead of time before the meat is put on and then warmed up in foil near the end), segregated a bit from the meat, or do foil wrapped stuff. Veggies kebabs, portabello mushrooms, corn on the cobb, firm tofu (marinated in something yummy) would all be great on the grill.

I usually cover one part of the grill that I will be putting my veggie burger on with aluminum foil because some of the veggie burgers will fall apart anyway. I just poke little fork holes where the grates wont touch the veggie burger. I also put my veggies in aluminum foil. Noones grilled veggies touch meat but that is a health issue for me. I dont do fish my boys are not big fans of grilled salmon. (yep I am the only vegetarian but sneaking veggie burgers to the boys when I can heheh shhhhh.)

I've also heard grilled fruit kebabs are great! Like cherries and pineapple on skewers, just grill long enough to heat through and char a little. You could put tofu cubes on there, too. I want to try that one this summer.

Here's a yummy one that a super-meaty boss made for me and my veg co-worker: slice portobellows into long strips, marinate in a teriyaki type sauce, then skewer in and out on wooden kebab sticks, soooo good.

I have to second big fat slices of eggplant or zucchini. And yummy tiny vidalia onions. Wow, this thread is making me hungry!

to you for being so accomodating of you SIL. Whenever I go to events, I always plan on bringing my own Boca burgers because nobody ever seems to remember to pick smth up when they're shopping for the rest of the food.

I agree sounds like a lot of sides assuming you be sure the baked beans are actually veg. I would be most appreciative if I was at a bbq and they knew Iw as veg and bought veggie burgers. But like other said you may want to cover the part you cook her's with foil. It will help her be able to eat what everyone else is to a sense.

Grilled veggies like asparagus are good to me but not everyone likes every veggie just because they are veg.

How did it go?
